Golden sam active not working

Every time I get the golden sam, it's active doesn't work. It doesn't drop any coins yet still uses up my crystals. It's so irritating. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've bought every upgrade, and have every character, and got everything killed but cursed Ares

It doesn't drop the coins, it adds them straight to your total.

While holding the gun, pause the game, then click the icon on the right of your character. It will fully display the ability of your current gun (if any).
