Best class? (can include features that are not implemented yet)
since I didn't see one yet I figured I'd make something to talk about your impressions of which class(es) you think is(are) the best.
Thief - guaranteed crit with movement ability (as well as increased movement speed) and fast movement speed in general - perfect for running through the overworld and dungeons/dungeon traps
(ranger a close second because also fast and also has the dodge dash and more armor, but no guaranteed crit ability)

Knight - Highest base damage & defense, low mobility countered by spamming Leap which has quick cooldowns & an enemy stun effect in a small AOE from where you land. Leap is great in combat & for traversing. It's quick & can allow you to avoid traps or environmental hazards.
Once you fully upgrade the sword, you crit so much that classes specializing in crit seem redundant. Could be wrong, but fairly sure once all upgrades are in place, the Knight has the highest sustained DPS on bosses. Can one-shot enemies up to quite a high level (specially with all the crits). Can tank almost anything in the dungeons so you don't even need to time/doge most traps & enemies. Knight is also 1 of the earliest classes in the game to obtain, requiring only that you beat the 1st dungeon.

I suppose it depends what you mean by best.
Best in combat, Knight no question. The more you upgrade, the more powerful he becomes.

Best at traversing the overworld? Hero or Witch.
Hero can charge across solid ground in a straight line faster & longer than anyone (till he bumps into something).
The Witch can fly over huge sections of the Swamp, making the mud boots obsolete & reducing how often you got to rely on the frogs.

For combat?

Knight - Perks high DPS and Defense. That helps you out survive more of the annoying traps. Even if you have slow speed that is what Jump and shield is for. Jump for movement and Shield for blocking attacks.

For mobility?

Hero, Reaper, Witch.

Hero for basic charging as you can cut through bushes and grass for some extra money.

Reaper for DPS, Special movement Speed, and the invincibility. Mostly for sword DPS.

Witch for the ability to fly over everything. The ability to avoid most of the floor problems like Mud is pretty useful.


Reason why Sword is better than tools or magic for DPS?

Sword is easiest to upgrade than random chance chest upgrade. Even then most magic classes have low armor and the real issue with this game is not the foes or the bosses... but the traps.

Much easier to upgrade the sword and go Knight for high DPS and Armor than trying to work to get one of the other classes to do better.

I wonder if the devs are able to track amount of time each player spends on a class whilst connected to the internet. I would love to see the data of which classes get played the most & by how much of a difference.
I wouldn't be surprised if Knight was the most played for being the best, followed by the Hero just because Hero is default.

I'd have to go with Thief or Pirate.

Thief has very high DPS (235 dmg at 7.94 atkspd) and is as fast as Ranger (9 movespd). His ability is nice for eliminating high priority targets, but it doesn't have much utility. You can use it to run but it seems like you keep the aggro of the enemies. With its low cooldown (1.5 seconds), it's spammable if you want to use it for only crits. He's a very squishy class (64 armor), but it shouldn't be too much of a problem after you've learned the enemies' attack patterns.

Pirate also has high DPS (268 dmg at 4.76 atkspd) but he's slower (7 movespd). His ability has its uses, but it isn't the best for combat. The cooldown starts as soon as you activate the ability, so if you wait out the entire duration then it's efficient. Otherwise, it has a long cooldown (5 seconds). That's why, assuming you cancel it right afterwards, using it to dodge leaves you at the mercy of your below average movement speed. It's great for exploration though, being fast while granting flight. If you end up in mud after a full cast, then you will be able to get another one off. You still suffer the decreased movement speed from being in the mud, but that bit of extra time has saved me several times. Though not as tanky as Knight, Pirate is still decent. (167 armor)

For comparison, Knight has high DPS (268 dmg at 4.2 atkspd) and the highest defense (250 armor), but he is very slow (6 movespd). As mentioned by previous users, his mobility comes from his leap. It has invincibility frames now, on top of stunning, making it one of the best skills for combat. It's on a low cooldown (1.5 seconds).

The only reason I value Pirate over Knight is the speed difference. Also because jumping everywhere just isn't for me.

Knight for dungeons and boss fights. I said this before that he's unkillable with enough HP.

The Pirate is amazing for getting around the map and exploring because of the sheer bird mobility.

That being said, I played through the game mostly as the Ranger just because I liked his dash move, and I prefer to play games with characters that move faster.

Knight has godly def

Pirate bird has a nice long use time, can shift again to cancel

Look in your menu. It shows your current character stats. They'll change with upgrades of course. I think they glow green if effected by dungeon buffs.
