what is jack boyd?
ive been conflicted on this for a while, is jack a hero? or a antihero? in the first game i realy believed he was the good guy ( even tho i did some bad things in that one). but now im having my doubts. how he treats lilly and the countless acts seems kinda heavier then before, i guess more people are questioning jack in this one.

In the first, it largely depends on how he is played, I would argue. You can play him as someone who genuinely tries his best to protect the people and be a father to his officers, only participating in everyday corruption to not get fired or even killed. Helps that during the Kickstarter trailer he says he never took a bribe (can be found on YouTube). Or you could play him as a corrupt arse, who only cared about getting the money and staying in power.

In this one... yeah, he definitely went off to the deep end. He is way more ruthles, albeit still in denial at first. I admit, I fell for his reasonings too, until he took really dark turns.
He may have started as a decent guy, only trying to do his job and being screwed over by the system he decided he got nothing to lose... except for his position in Sharpwood.

One thing can be asked: Why is he so keen on staying chief of police? It seems to be his main motivation. Why is he doing that? Is he doing that because he got nothing else to do? Does he actually mean it? Or is he just out for the power that comes with the position?

This is the police isn't a story with heroes, it's a story with humans flawed and all with different shades of screwed up and by the second one, jack just cracked and embraced his own flaws.

it's an observation about how Boyd in the first pretty much is all about denial, that everything he does is justified because he was either coerced/had no choice or was a choice of lesser evil or greater evil and that since he's going to stop once he gets his 500K.

The scene is also a good observation of how Lana has gone completely crazy and destroyed herself, she was an idealist wanting to clean up the city but the events of the first game drove her completely off the deep end and now she's just become obsessed and delusional.

the letter to his son at the start of the story answers this you pick the reason, either because he actually really does enjoy being a police chief solving crimes, enforcing the law etc or because it's the only thing he was ever good at.

It does provide an answer, yes. The question remains, however, whether his reasonings in the letter are genuine (I personally think so) and whether they stick until the end considering how much he goes off the deep end following the letter.
I like to think of Jack as someone who cares about doing good police work. And, if we are honest, Jack coming to Sharpwood may be one of the best things happening to town, since he can shape up the department (on the third run or so XD) and make sure the police can actually do their jobs properly.
