What are you using Planes for?
Hi there, I'm currently wondering what I should use planes for? I use ships to export goods and helicopters to transport workers. So I'm very interested how you are using planes.

Thanks guys!

Tourist transport - that's pretty much it. Too expensive to run it any other way unless you have a lot of spare fuel and resources to build a functioning airport.

I think exporting electronics and chemicals might be good idea. They take a lot of them and dont create any traffic

for tourism, decoration, realism and as a challenge :)
it's a pity that our citizens can't fly on vacation to increase happiness and loyalty.....

i never even reach the point where i build an airport yet, there is always other things that is higher on my priority list such as producing my own x product and even more industry or logistic networks.
I dare to say its mostly for turists or if you want to make it possible for your own people to visit example a cathedral somewhere vs taking the train.
But planes could be interesting for transporting the most valuable things like nuclear fuel to power plants different places on the map vs transporting a little via train to remote places.
But ofcourse you can always move stuff from one warehouse to the next and then the nuclear fuel goes where it have to it just take longer.
But the airport is important if you want to build your own planes and export them and turists.
Regarding your people cannot travel on vacation outside your wonderfull republic.
well i dare to say maybe some would consider to flee, so they are refused to travel abroad.

You only get so many tourists at once, but since they are split up across multiple custom houses and beyond the borders, airplanes can be useful for quickly bringing them all to a tourist area.

Airplanes are also good for expanding quickly over long distances (8+ km) or for getting access to western markets early on (helicopters work too, but their fuel costs are a lot higher. Airplane fuel economy is on par with trucks). The materials for a cargo airport with a 700m runway can be bought for less than 50,000 rubles (in 1960) and the AN-12 can be bought for about 105,000 rubles each.

For tourism in general, in some cases, as transportation for workers.
The entry of tourism is excellent when you have a first-class sector. attraction and accessibility will contribute a lot to tourism. Local attractions such as mountains, rivers surrounded by trees, lakes, fountains in parks and monuments are very attractive. Hotels, restaurants, markets and museums are essential.

Reality or not, a game's forum is not the place to discuss it, let alone initiate it.
Save discussion of current politics for reddit, 4chan, twitter, and other discourse cesspools.
As far as I remember, there are export thresholds above which prices of exported goods are falling down quicker. Each type of transport (air, sea, land... hmm not sure if trains and trucks are separeted) has its own. So, if you want to export as much as you can and keep price high, you have to use all of them. Thresholds are also changing with your population growth. There is an excel file somewhere on this forum with numbers.

I built two airports. One was really nice and really served no purpose other than to transport workers to another airport to help "man" it's control tower while I set up another town nearby.
Second time I played with aircraft was a necessity. The map I had would not allow you to sell anything but raw resources at the border to NATO and had no water ways. I created that map on purpose. Air was the only way to buy and sell most items to NATO other than vehicles. The road to NATO was also like the early Alaskan highway during WW2; very primitive, long, and slow. I built the airport to sell aircraft I built to NATO. I also bought electronics from the Soviet border, stored for my use, and then sold surplus to NATO border. I used those funds to buy NATO blueprints for aircraft and other vehicles for my use and to sell. It was not overly practical. BUT, it was fun

Honestly, I've never needed planes. Unless you have cities halfway across the map, the ER medium-high speed trains are plenty to grab tourists. I once tried using helicopters to transport tourists-helicopters take in massive amounts of fuel, and I assume planes do to. Anyway, an electric train, especially if fueled with domestic electricity, is going to be cheaper.
