Tram vs Bus, and when to use them?
I've never actually used trams before and only started building them my current play through - not on realistic, im building using resources with option to use money because im kinda playtesting a map and I've never used things like extensive rail networks, tramlines etc and building everything just to realize you need a loop / end station etc can be a long mistake to fix in a cramped urban area :p

Anyways, I set up tram lines in 2 areas, basically - my main city, where I'm trying to centralize things like clothing/fabric production and have a construction district with cement/asphalt/concrete/gravel too, and a 2nd tramline kind of between 3 cramped nearish city/towns just a short trip away running from the urban area I have university / lots of housing, to *another* construction area with gravel/asphalt/cement/concrete.

Basically just wondering how ya'll use trams, I basically planned track around where cities will be growing but near enough to existing buildings etc so try and ferry people to services and jobs.

Do you feel they're faster / more reliable than running multiple busses? Are trams a good means of moving workers to industry just outside a town/city or would busses still be a faster solution?

Trolleybus is superior to both.
To me they are the best option to get people arround.
What I like most is that they can go on rail as well as tram tracks.
Therefor I often use both.
In one town I have a line going through a train station.
This line connects two ends of a city with the center.
Here is one end.

And here is the other end.

Here at the right is the station they are running through.

From here workers have connection to another line which takes them here.

This town runs stable for ages. Trams running no matter the weather, are repaired in a reasonable time, transport a lot of pax, no need to get fuel.
Downside is that they are not as fast as busses. But I´m in the year 2030. There are some running 70 km/h which is okay.

Here is a better shot from my station.

Best regards.
Trams are good if you build dedicated tram tracks for the majority of it. this way trams dont get bogged down by other traffic

downside is the point of failure if you lose power. where busses will run so long as you have fuel

I'm extremely curious about your reasoning!

Best regards.

This is all so beautiful and orderly compared to even the niced planned parts of my cities!
If you are looking to reach large populations, electrically powered public transportation will be essential or you might have serious problems not only procuring fuel, but distributing it fast enough to keep buses fueled. Electricity is much easier to produce and distribute.

Have bus lines feeding workers to your essential services (power, heat, water) but don't rely on buses as the primary means for public transportation or your republic might end up like mine at 78K struggling to move workers.
And I'm finally producing surplus coal for power plant too, so electricity will also cost less overall to even produce/supply which is why I kinda wanted to start hooking up tram and so on. I only have two places with a track online and am working on a third just to have it ready now instead of cramming it in after the fact, haha

Kind of working on doing it where industry is consolidating right now because I'm most wanting to just move labor
