Tourism Is Too Good To Be True
some context: started a border republic on realistic hard mode , spent genuine irl hours and days setting up a working republic , got caught in debt decided to give up and just goof around by making hotels , next thing iknow im crazy rich

tourism is broken (its nothing new as i've been told)
the reasons in my opinion:

1. firstly super simple setup ----> hotels
its basically a Residential house that each resident makes atleast 100$ without having to provide a workplace a kindergarten nor needing education , no loyalty system and police enforcement is optional , just place a hospital (optional) and provide shopping water&waste disposal&power , heck you can even invite workers from custom house if you are near one

2. bug or a feature?
the tourist will come in HUGE numbers when you first start to make hotels , make overpriced hotels with a trip rating of 1/5 but still for the first 5 month tourist will come in big numbers which provides you with 5 months of free 20k income ---> then use the same income to make better hotels (which requires the same maintenance as the bad hotels) and suddenly the same overprice trip to your republic is now justifiable and makes the trip rate around 3.4 which brings a constant flow of tourism

3. just build hotels tourism hardly requires other buildings like bars and entertainment
(tho some sports like a indoor pool helps a ton)

thats it really , it feels a little bit overlooked by devs (maybe thats how I feel) and it has turned into a cheese way to play the game instead of a fun money making "industry"

Most industries are quite profitable up to a certain point...all are basically capped by sales price inflation, and tourism is capped by rating...So you make good money with crappy entertainment as long as you have the ratings, but can't endlessly expand the tourism industry without improving the rating...Difference to industry is that the limiting factor are not your worker, but people showing up on the border...tourists are essentially the only ressource which is not endlessly available for import.

20k per month, so i take it you made ~240k a year with it...What other industries have you tried for money making that almost crashed your republics eco?

the issue is that rating is not limiting at all , as i said you can make a normal three star hotel on max price and still have more tourist than a single hotel with 100 capacity can hold (3.4 overall rate without anyother services)

transportation of the tourist are a little bit more limiting cause there is always more people who intent to come than the people who are in the republic but getting those people from the custom house(s) is the limiting factor
btw 20k only if you use bad hotels with unoptimized transport (just like starting) i have gotten 3 star hotels and some new busses and getting 40k- 47k , sure its not going to make you crazy rich but the simplicity and the value that it gives to the little effort you have to put on it is not balanced

- other than it pays it self you can use the money for buildings that increase rating meaning even more money , tourism is a good passive income , but invest in it as you are investing in other industries and you get much more value than expanding a steel or clothing industry -

I sort of agree; if you can keep up with garbage removal, tourism seems a bit way too OP. Just checked my old save from 1976, where four hotels (300 workplaces in total) make 2.7 million a year, while the *whole rest* of my industries make 2.1.

Even clothing, which currently employs 180 workplaces, would make 1.3-1.6 (generous estimate) with the same workplaces number and wouldn't get nowhere near close. And I don't even take into account possible prices inflation/deflation risks.

Although, to be fair, I don't know if there's any inflation effects on tourism are implemented. Would be lovely if someone could share some insights on that.

In the past I had the impression it doesn't do much, maybe I misremembered ...Gonna build some hotels now and see how it goes :D
Tourism was way, way more profitable when it was implemented. They nerfed it and everyone just forgot about it. Add in the fact that in the waste update they made the tourists produce tons of garbage.

i did not knew they nerfed it , tho it is still profitable , trash is not a big problem (yet) for me a large trash bin connected with a pathway and a technical office with a garbage truck set to unload at a custom house is enough and it does not cost that much to export your trash (compered to the profit)

one downside i can think about hotels and their trash is if the garbage trucks cause some traffic (if you decide to export)

Money is a non issue for veterans.
The real threat in the game is missing something important that will snowball hard. Like "oops I didn't connect that heat pipe correctly now everyone's dead". Or "oops, my waste is overflowing and now there is pollution everywhere and everyone's dying". And the traditional "I didn't see my justice was overloaded, now everyone is unhappy and crime is rampant".

I think I can say it happened at least once to any of us. The game is full is of many interconnected system, and if one fail, it may make the whole republic break down if you don't react fast.
