Cancelling road upgrade

If I accidentally set a gravel road to be upgraded to asphalt, is there a way to undo it?

I've looked everywhere for another option, but it seems that I've either got to upgrade or demolish and rebuild as gravel.

That seems a harsh penalty for going a few pixels over while dragging.

Unfortunately that is true. There is no way to cancel upgrade. However, fortunately, we can cancel demolition at least.
I hope cancelling upgrade and cancelling machine replacement will be possible in future.

Upgrade is treated like construction phase - you can't undo construction of existing, partially finished building.
But I agree, it is annoying, especially accidentally deleting ongoing construction.

Yes, imagine in realistic mode if you select an asphalt road, press shift and upgrade your entire city in one big click..... this is instant death.... LOL
