Also, the ship's width needs to be 5m less than the segment span of the bridge to pass under it. Use the measurement tool to confirm a bridge has a segment span at least 5m wider than the ships you want to use before building it; some advertise a "distance between pillars" larger than what it typically builds over water.
Ships just phase through pedestrian bridges.
You should design your bridges so that your marine traffic can pass under them. If it's on an import/export route you want the bridge high with wide gaps but I think those bridges can't have curves. It will be more expensive and will take more space to get the bridge high enough. For local traffic the ships are generally smaller so you can make do with simpler bridge.
You can do the good old save&restore trick or try it on a separate save. I have a "test playground" save with unlimited money for such cases.

If you for example want the largest super tanker to go under your bridge then you need to build the bridge like 50m high since the tranker is like 45-48m heigh.
But you will soon discover that you cannot raise the bridge higher than 35m since then the game wont allow you to construction it any higher.
So if you try to build the brige from a ground height of example 5m on each side then you cant build it high enough..
A solution to build the bridge higher is to raise the terrain on both sides and then build the bridge up high.
But personaly i raised the terrain to 50m and build a "flat" bridge since it just look better vs having a bridge with tall ramps and then "standing freely".
But honestly super tankers belong on the ocean where there are no bridges in the first place. But in some situations you might want a bridge.
After i build mine i had the idea... why dident i just build a tunnel below water it look much better than a super tall bridge ;-)
But a little to late. 😎
