Should i plant trees for lumbermills myself?
I remember it is stated in the tutorial that i should do this, but my workers dont seem to chop them, are they purely decorative? Or is there a specific type of tree i should plant?

I know workers can plant trees by themselves but they're doing this sooooooo slow i cant sustain my logging industry chopping 10 trees in a year

The woodcutter building needs workers and correct kind of trucks for being able to work working in the woods.
Besides that electricity and fuel.
Not to mention heat and garbage.
Some moded buildings don't need heat though.
Trees need some time to be fully grown.
I tested the pine trees a while ago.
It took em 4 months before they started to harvest them.
Dunno if that number is still accurate.
Also different trees may have different times.

In one of the latest updates the trees are planted by the woodcutter themselves of the research for that is done.
Before that the players supposed to plant them.

I was reading somewhere that trees which are placed with the map editor are ignored.
But I couldn't confirm that for I haven't tested that.

My woodcutter can be seen here at the right edge of the picture.

The woodcutter seems to replant the trees it cuts down once that research is completed. However, it doesn't seem to plant new trees in available open space for itself.

So the player might want to plant extra trees once after forestry research is completed.
Jepp, indeed. The Forrest on the screen shot was planted by myself as well.
At early game, before research. You need to plant trees yourself.
Focus on pines or acacias. Use the tree + acessories menu to plant trees as those once fully developed will be counted and cut down. From my testing it takes a little over 6 months but thats usually not a issue.

Read a post somewhere you need to wait the woodcutter to also be finished first, otherwise it will not cut down trees.

Also each woodcutter is jealous and will not share the area with other woodcutter posts. So make each of them distant from one another. Usually having 1/4 to 1/3 of the full zone is enough for many months.

Just remember each woodcutter at 1960 is only able to gather around 8-12tons of wood/day. Thats because trucks can´t gather wood at the same speed the workers cut them down. So you can reduce max amount of workers to around 5.

9 months for pine; freshly tested few days ago.

A tip if you want to create a lumber industry: first plant the trees, wait 9 months and only after place the woodcutter. They should be "present" in the overlay of the woodcutter (the dots), but beware that frames drop when this happens. Doing so, the workers will start cutting trees closest to the building.

I had a woodcutter placed before planting and it still goes chopping God knows which trees. I don't know if the initial trees (before planting) were cut and what will happen afterwards.
Thanks for sharing your test results.
Much appreciated. 👍
