How hard is it?
I'm fairly used to city builders and simulation games, but from what I have gathered after reading reviews of this game it does seem quite difficult. It makes me hesitant to buy it. If you play with easy settings, how hard is it compared to Tropico 6, Cities Skylines 1 & 2 etc?

Steam gives you 2 hours to return it...you will master the game enough somewhere between 50-100h, you will most likely never perfect it, as there are too many details and systems to remember, but it will be worth it.

Never played Tropico.
Cities skylines is a city painter...(Looks great tho!) WRSR is a republic builder...very different.

On easy it would be comparable to a mix of the city building and citizen day to day times of Tropico 5 or 6 and Factorio's logistics. The more features you enable, the harder it gets.

There can be a steep learning curve when you use more systems; however, easy would be very similar to Tropico and an easier Factorio as Silent_Shadow says. It is worth it. And then you'll start to branch out and build things yourself and suddenly it's a couple hundred hours later and you are playing with everything enabled.

The game does a very interesting thing: Instead of just giving you tons of money on easy like a lot of other games do, it allows you to turn entire game mechanics off to make it easier; so depending on the settings you can set it to be as easy as any of the games you mention, or a lot harder if you want to.

I found it extremely frustrating and the ui is terrible
Ran through tutorials and some campaigns but could not get the game to do anything when I started a custom game
There is very little feedback telling you why something is not working just that it's not working.
That said when you figure it out it is very fun and complex sim until you do something wrong and everything stops
Quite a few times I almost rage quit !

On realistic it can be quite difficult. I'm on my third attempt at realistic. If you don't mind starting over after learning of your mistakes, it's honestly the most rewarding city builder so far (on realistic). I'm use to constantly starting over in Cities, so starting over in this one doesn't bother me, even though progress is generally much slower.

On non-realistic, it's still a good game. Think of playing a more advance Cities Skylines but instead of zoning, you just use the plopables mod for everything.

bballjo (the first person to respond to you), check out his youtube. Last night I watched a nearly 3 hour video, and a few days ago many other tutorials of his. Very worth while to get a grasp and idea of how to play.

Yeah, the biggest issue this game has is that it doesn't teach you anything, you can only learn by experimenting or talking to other players.

Think of Workers & Resources as i city building study simulator, not a game. Sort of like DCS is a flight study simulator, not a game.

In other games like Cities Skylines (which I also love) you paint some zones and buildings appear by themselves.
In W&R every single thing has to build using trucks, mechanisms, resources and workers... in realism mode at least (which IMHO is the only way to play it).

The key word here is planning: you need to plan everything, not just slap down buildings willy nilly. If you build something in the wrong place, though luck... then you have to tear it down using a demolition office. You need to take your time.

Of course you could play it on simple mode where everything is build immediatly, and that might be okay when starting out. But the way it is meant to be played (again just my opinion) is in realistic mode.

I wouldn't call it hard exactly, but it is easy to get lost if you are not willing to take the time to learn the mechanics. But there ARE room for QOL-improvements for sure, espeicially tooltips in-game.

Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is the city builder for men. It will make you strong, like bull.
