Two days ago i build some roads and railroad and it was possible to automatic adjust the ground below the road and railroad uphill without problems.
I select the road and drag a line on the map and keep holding in the left mouse, and when i want to level the ground i hold in right mouse button and in my game it work as it should.
I play on the experimential branch and its a brand new savegame.
I have played now and then since day one in early access and i never had a bug like yours.
try to verify the game files.
That's a bit annoying, since i can't remap this to ESC either.... Gotta have to get used to a new key then...
There were other occasions where it was disturbing... like the flatten terrain you mentioned.
Yes, pressing ESC cancels the assignment rather than assigning ESC.
IMHO it is not necessary to be able to cancel an assignment because you always have to save changes to the key settings or are able to cancel them.
So I'd consider this ESC drama a bug.
