How to save the mod correctly?

Example: I download a mod of some building or transport. I don't like the author's number of staff, the amount of product consumed or produced, or the location of the walkways. Anyway, I'm making some changes in the mod files.

Question: how can I save and use this mod so that it does not return to the default state after the update?
If I make changes to the 784150 folder, the mod resets when updating or just disappears, as happened to me the other day.
If I copy the mod into the Workshop_WIP foldr and make changes there, then in the game I see only option with the green icon without my corrections, but not corrected the blue one.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello!
To actually save your edits you have to either: make mod folder read only after you changed everything, this way steam will not have a way to update it; or after you copy mod to your wip folder, you have to unsubscribe from original mod as game ignores wip mod if you have same mod in your subscriptions.

OMG... the second option ist so simple and obvious that now I feel like an idiot. Of course, I should have guessed that subscribtion mod have priority over homemade one with the same number.
