Ships not sailing up river / under bridge?
I've made a small port on a river that leads to the sea, but my ships won't sail up the river from the sea.

Is it something to do with water depth, or bridge height, or are there restrictions on what ships can sail on rivers? The ships are really small (from workshop). I've placed buoys to try and guide them either side of the central column of a bridge that runs over the river.

The bridges look very low to me.

Her are some commands you can use to check:

With a ship selected

Show navigable waters for the selected ship - h (hold)

This will change depending on its current operations.

Show planned route of the selected ship - x (hold)

Shows the dots where it plans on turning.

You may want to check the bridge in the background for comparism.

There is some way to check the hight of the poles.
I forgot how to do that atm.

According to an older thread, it's the measurement tool.

Bridge clearances can be read about here:

Just skip down to the bridge section.

Yup, deleted the bridge and now the ships are using the river, including all my older ships which now use it as a shortcut to where they're going.

yes keep the bridge until you have the a new taller bridge built I build my bridges at least 25 meters high you can check at the end where it meets the water when building, build even higher for bigger ships, sometimes big bridges are expensive and it makes more sense to make a shorter bridge, but plan to expand in the future, sometimes just build a wood bridge to begin and use that to double the speed of building the big bridge from both sides of the river

I wish it was possible to create central part of bridge first and then add end slopes to it. Would make building bridges soooo much easier.

EDIT: Like, how do I get both sides of the river, where the bridge ends will be, to be the exact same height?

Use the Grid lines and build the bridges Near Snap, Sometimes right beside eachother, Also use longest length between pillar bridges that you can afford, as they may cause traffic jams when you have more traffic, use bouys for that as waypoints, jalso level both sides of the river the same level when planning the bridge so they will have the same ramp length up them, Last if you plan to use both sides of the river build two bridges for one way highways, Plan for the future.

I like to show you a 50 m high bridge over an enormous river.
You can jump to Min:05:00 of the video to see the bridge.

At this video at Min:17:17 U can see the bridge at daylight.

Since this is the only river in the map and a main traffic line for seagoing vessels I wanted to make sure that all ships were able to pass underneth it.

Also Think About Using mixed bridges like that picture above, Concrete bridges are great for starts as they have huge turns to get where you need , and can go over roads or rail sections, And Using Beam Bridge conections that have the longest range between pillars, is what I use

Jepp... mixed bridges look nice. However a player need to play around with the map editor to plan those bridges. Once planed it can be built in realistic mode.

I did not know that, I just plan my bridges in the construction mode, i dont touch editor for that play around with and without near snap
MrKrabs Mar 21, 2024 @ 12:59pm
You couldn´t end a planed bridge over water.
Therefor I produce a flat spot of land just to let the bridge element tempoary end there to snap the other part. Once that is done I lower the land again.
T600_Mod Mar 21, 2024 @ 1:08pm
yes the planning must occur over land. otherwise you use editor, or just use editor to clear water under later. personally i dont like to use editor as if i save by accident or i come back with ininite money
