Alternative you can cheat a little bit and click the coal mine and hold it in your "hand"
and then move it across the game world fast and see if it light up, then you can find any kind of resource this way though it can take a while to find it.
Remember that you can just temporarily turn research off, and then it will be visibleon the minimap.
No pain and all that..

confirmed. basically this change says. you need a college degree to write on a map.
and you need to waste time figuring out where this stuff is if you want to play realistic or any mode where you can't easily get to research how to write on a map. it's a bad change. it increases the barrier of entry to near non-existent for new players
some people call it playing and having fun.
I play on a map from the workshop.
I easily could have find out where the resources are.
But why should I?
The devs made little efford to hide the resources.
It´s just not showing on the minimap untill research is done.
There is no need to make big efforts to hide that info.
Players know how to play and how to have fun.
At least most of them.
With this mod you can hoover over the map to check where to build your mines best.

You can also use it to hoover over your entire map to find out where your resources are,
if you wish to do so.

Next up is Iron and Oil
To me this one change killed Random maps and it'll encourage the custom map makers to show the resource layouts in the workshop and it's a negative to Steam Cloud players (that have to play vanilla)
EDIT: Wait that's not true. I can use that mod for the built-in custom maps and then take a pic and use that for cloud gaming.
if someone really wants to make that effort to check everything...
Not my choice.
A little side note:
A few years back I watched a car race on TV.
It was the last race of the season.
Unfortunately I wasn´t in time for the race since I was at work.
Since I expected that to happen I recorded the race on tape.
On my way home I avoided every source of possible information
which could make me know the final result.
Once home I started the video and watched the race full of joy.
For me it was like live since I didn´t know who´s gonna win.
From my point of view same goes for the game.
If a player so wants to know where the resources are, than have a look.
It´s up to you.
But you also can choose the thrill and build where you want.
and find out the location of the resources at a later stage.
Worst case scenario is that you built an entire city on top of an oil reservoir.
Relovate and tear down a whole city could be a nice challenge.
I´m out here. I don´t have any experience about that.
Didn´t know that mods can´t be used with cloud gaming.
That´s a good point.
But you know better than me that people will look so they will find a way of doing so.
That´s not a good idea imo.
Many map creators do a nice job when placing resources on their artwork.
Just as an example:
Coal is placed along the mountains like in real live and so forth.
Having it generated it for sure will always look very odd.
I believe it´s a better choice if the the modders won´t be hindered in their creativity.
