How do windpower really work?
I have started to set up wind power to reduce the overall import of power to my republic, but I haven't seen any reduction in imports of power, instead I have seen a slow increase of it, which I find strange, is this a bug or am I doing it wrong?

Small wind turbines give little amount of power, thus maybe increase of population is more significant factor than additional power.
I had small (150 people) village with small factory, large wind turbine reduced import almost to zero, thus wind power works - just yeld is enough for village, not the city.
Yes I guess thats tru but I figure I would atlest see some reduction of import of power.

My population hasent incresed that much and there havent been anything power consuming built that would make any diffrens.
I wouldn't look at import power to determine it. Look at resource production; either you are producing more power, or you're not.
Usually the issue is prioritizing wind power over other sources of power. If the power source has two or more nodes between it and another source, usually it will not receive any loading and thus will not produce power.
That seems kind of pointless, if it can't be fully implemented just because there is another source of electricity on the grid you connect it to it don't serve any purpose at all.
im no expert in the power system.
But a little tip
When building the transformer stations be aware that there is a difference if you use the ones that have yellow arrow connection icons vs using the ones with the orange.

example
If you import power from the border and you later on build a windmill and connect that to the yellow power network then the import power and the windmill will kind of work against each other and the light my be flickering.

personaly i always build the orange transformer next to the import location and then connect import power and my own generated power to the "in" location so the transformer can be adjusted to who should be the priority.
WHen i do this the power i generate is used prior to importing it and it run stable reducing my power bill.
But if i only uses the yellow transformers then the import and example windmills will kind of work against each other.

With other words anything that produce power should be connected to the transformer with the orange colour and from there connect to the yellow ordinary network.
I find this to work the best.

Actualy i think i will go and watch a youtube video about it to learn more. ;-)

- i like windmills but i dont have that good experience and i cant even remember if i even see one running at full capacity.
Well I can try that and see if it works.

The purpose is to reduce the amount of fuel needed to run a power plant and the pollution it generates. On maps with little coal, oil, and uranium, windmills can be good for reducing the amount needed for electrical power.
Is it actually doing that though if you can't prioritize it?
Well I think I'm gonna give that one a try. Haven't built them yet.
My plan is to hook up a few windmills, drag the wires through a priority switch with another source of electricity, and take it from there.
Yes I tryed that yesterday had to tear down some things to do so but I havent seen any diffrens, but its been a population boom at the same time so I guess it dident show up.
For long winter nights I can recommend to you all my favourite guide regarding this topic. I recently converted it into a long CZ video version, but that would be of little use to you, so reading it is

How to correctly use green energy so it does it´s job WITHOUT killing of your grid you will find inside (and, regarding priority switches, in comments bellow from me).

Yes, green energy is working in game, thought you need to take into accounts things like
- ghost power
- ghost gates
- node prioritisation
- source prioritisation
- grid capacity

Once you get to know these fakaup game can pull on you, you will slowly become a master of power. Slowly, because it took me 12 hours of recording and aditing that 1h+ long tutorial to full understand what is happenning :D

Why you didn t posted it yourself? :)

If you don't prioritize it, then windmills can still reduce the fuel spent by power plants, but it is better to prioritize.

For that to happen, the wind speed needs to be very high (25 m/s for small windmills and 35 m/s for the big ones) and they need to be loaded. Most of the time the wind is nowhere near that.

I didn't want to just throw the book at his face right off the bat.
