I hope we at least will get smooth flat roads with fine skinning at some point.

This is how it should be in realistic mode.
I found that I can use roads to design the land before i ever build anything... As long as the road shows yellow, you can use it to kinda Scyth the land to that point gradient. Ive used this technique to level this entire area I am working on.

Part of the reason why it is so hard to automate flattening, is that areas always require different levels to smooth out. It is complex to calculate. I like the idea of showing us an estimated time for completion at the time of confirmation to build.
You want a perfectly flat area, That isnt hard, Simply use the road sweeping technique i explained above, and then the smooth tool.
