How to load vehicles onto open hulls at customs?
I'm playing RM and trying to get rail started, but the RCO obviously can't just buy a track layer.

Everything I have found just says that you have to buy it disassembled at the customs office, which I did. I also bought an open hull capable of carrying it. But nobody ever explains how you use the UI to load the track layer on the truck.

In the disassembled vehicle's window, there is a button for loading the mechanism onto a vehicle, but I have not been able for the life of me figure out what to click on after that to make it load. The vehicle is not visible to click on in the game world so I have to find it in menus and windows, but nothing there works.

Clicking on the vehicle portrait in the customs house window does nothing.

Clicking on the vehicle's open window does nothing (I have tried multiple spots in that window).

Clicking on the vehicle in the List of Vehicles menu does nothing.

I would assume that all of these should work, and I can't think of where else the vehicle might be listed, so I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.

- use the "start" flag to send the truck on a journey

The same idea is being used to buy high-rise construction cranes (which cannot move on their own), cable car carriages, train wagons.

Thanks for the detailed reply, that was exactly what I needed.

When I found the 'load vehicle onto truck' button and it said the vehicle had to be in the same building, it never occurred to me that I might need a road depot to take care of it and the button would be useless. D=

Anyway, thanks, got it taken care of.
