Why don't you use trains? The vanilla steel mill has three slots you could be using.

For auto-buy, currently, I run a automobile exporting economy, like Czech. If I import, the profit will drastically decrease, and I kind of rely on foreign currency to land down new towns far from the industrial center.
I don't know where and how to edit the config. As for trains, that is a good idea. I try my best to stay away from trains unless absolutely necessary, like transporting automobiles from factory to docks. Trains and signals just bring bad memories for me.
Trains, especially with the introduction of the RDO, are just made for what you would need.
I can understand your hesitation, but you are missing a very important feature that would serve your needs well.
Good luck :)
