Villages
I know the game is tailored for bigger cities. But I think it'd be cool to be able to make smaller villages as well - or have them as parts of the map, sort of as small seeds for early game industries.

The village houses could have internal heating with ovens, and water from wells etc. - everything tailored for the rural scale. Easier to maintain infrastructurewise - but very low volume.

This would help so much with the feeling of bringing forward industrialization and developing a nation IMO

You mean smaler?

Have a look at Novu`s game.

So villages are possible imo.
indeed, with mods great villages can be made, but the vanilla assets still lack some small-scale things and of course most vanilla assets are in proper socialist modernism instead of traditional eastern european or neo-classical stalinist architecture.

in particular i miss a smaller hospital/policlinic instead of the vanilla tower hospital. but there are plenty of mod assets of smaller clinics in the workshop.

now, about smaller infrastructures like self-heating or in-built water&sewage its a bit more complicated.

old town houses come with self-heating but that pollutes and shortens the people's lifespan, untreated well water and pit sewage should have similar effects imo,

the problem is balancing out those primitive services so small towns don't become instant death traps for your citizens.

With self heating houses and water and sewage by technical office, small villages work just fine.

I thought that smaller villages were the devs intention.
Why else is there a town created for every kilometre of road?

All you need for village, as long as it is near a city, is house(s), kindergarden (nice to have, but not mandatory, limiting workers is key), power, heating exchanger (unless it is "old" house), water and sewage (with pipes or technical services) and most importantly bus or train to the city.
All services besides kindergarden can be provided by passenger transport. If it is single house (for example next to heating plant) even personal cars can be an option.

I have some "villages" right next to a industry. Bus line is bringing workers from a city and on a return trip takes passengers and students to the city. This lessens load on worker transport and increased mortality of villagers living in polluted area is of little concern.

As previously stated with mods villages are very easily possible. There are a plethora of small shops, kindergartens (two playgrounds and one laundry are available even), clinics, schools, etc.

the main sense to me, to have small villages is to have the possibility to build with money that you earn earlier in the game, very far from your main cities, and unlink to them. Then step by step try to connect with roads or rail your villages with bigger cities on the same map. that's to me would be very funny and a sort of competitive mode to play. The point is, with all the needs you have to give to te population simply you can't have small villages or small towns. One suggestion could be to have a different system for the day/work cycle, just like our real life, try to have 5 days of work and 48h for free time and in that time workers can have time to go to big cities for all their needs.
Another way is too have less needs for town under a population cap.

I´ve got this village roughly in the middle of my map for several reasons.

- It gives fire coverage for some distant buildings like electric swtitches,
- Provide a gas station,
- Have a minimum of workforce which I can send to construction sites somewhere
if my helicopters are to busy.

It is supported completely from my starter village.

It is not realy necessary to have such a village.
But I like it.

most of the villages didn't had power until over years 2000 in ex soviet republic. some of them didn't even had electricity so a house which require no kindergarten, shop and heating is required for villages
MrKrabs Nov 20, 2022 @ 6:38pm
I disagree on the upper statement.
It´s not the house which require a shop and a Kindergarden, it´s the people.
Some of the houses are so called "self heating". So no external heat is required.

Furthermore there is a difference if you connect those villages with a line to another city or have them completely independent.

Yep, you can skimp on building a lot of service buildings in villages if you include transportation to a city with them.
Duke Flapjack Nov 21, 2022 @ 3:37am
You also technically only need to supply food, clothes, and sport (I think) to keep people IN the village. You may also need culture, I can't remember. I know education isn't critical.

I love small villages, my nuke plant was always coming up short of workers and engineers cause of traffic jams with the trams. Built a small village right behind it, mostly engineers now it runs full power.

I'm playing North Yugoslav map for almost 2 years. Now I have a population of 132.000 population in 1961 (started in 1930) with almost 40 towns. Traffic jams are a nightmare, but it's nice.
