Orphanage needs fine tuning
I’m concerned about the number of orphans in my republic. I have 12k people and I almost fill second one. I didn’t had any health, water, pollution or heating issues, all citizens can walk to hospital by foot. 90% avarege all the time and no single block with lower number.

It’s just my assumption but is the fertility limited by age? I mean is it possible that these orphans lost parents due to old age? That they patents were in age like 70?
In my opinion if public health is fine people shouldn’t die at young age(or is it random?)

BTW I have enough tutors in my orphanages and kids can walk to school.

Might it be an issue with demographic structure(big immigration on start and baby booms)?

I saw many comments to just let that children die and demolish all orphanages to get rid of that problem. Maybe some “pay for adopt abroad” tool would be possible? Or some root cause statistics why parents die?

Orphans are created by prisoners sent to jail, not just death of parent.

How many prisoners do you have?

It’s like 20 prisoners at the time, prison fully staffed, no expired crimes.

Are children returning to parents after minor offense sentence is finished?

I don't think the children do return to parent after prison term - so, orphanage builds up over time based on past prisoner quota too. You can check the status of a child whose parent is in prison and monitor if they get returned on release. I've seen prisoners disappear from my country on release when there is no housing for them, but their child stays in the orphanage.

But you probably have death waves caused by rapid birth expansion. I try to moderate the expansion simply to avoid these birth/death cycles.

I have a republic with 12k citizens. currently 7 big (180 children) orphanages and there are packed full. Happiness is now at 59% but has been lower. Productivity at 62%.

I think I do have a clue why so many orphans, now that you have said this, @AngerIsAnEnergy. I have had a prison without heating where all my prisoners died in winter. I only saw that and now heating is on. Will let it run and see if I get less orphans.

I was wrong. Children are returned from orphanage after prisoner is released.

Of course, freezing your prisoners will make permanent orphans too :)

Hey all! I tried to find the best thread for this topic. I have 17.6k people in 2 towns. For this number, I need 3 small and 7 big orphanages.

7*150+3*45=1,185 orphans

It’s a bit too much for a not-too-huge republic.

I love that feature, but it definitely needs to be tuned.

I watched for many of my citizens and their children and suddenly found adults lost connection to their parents. It means that if a citizen goes to prison or dies, his children go directly to an orphanage. Not to their relatives.

In addition, nobody can adopt an orphan. It’s a bit out of realism.

I explored a few statistics articles on the Internet. The number of orphans in different countries is pretty significant. But most of them were adopted by new families. This number is much higher in every country than the number of orphans in orphanages.

It looks like a problem-solving solution for the current implementation.

Don’t know how to attract developers, so get a goose emoji 🪿

Same as I, never build even one:) Why would I? It is not necessary.
If I have every flat full, I don´t care if there is place for somebody new or not, if not they leave my republic, no problem at all:)
All i need is a good sustainable birth rate and that is all :)

Exactly my thoughts - they are currently a nuisance too big for the workforce growth they provide. I had to add a big police station after 2 years with an orphanage in 3k city just because my criminality rating went through the roof!

They are good source of prison workers though. I always send those in uranium mines.

Having multiple monuments around orphanages can eliminate the loyalty loss from them and criminality is eliminated by ensuring there are enough tutors. This works even on the hard citizen reactions setting.

If you want to minimize death waves and the resulting orphan waves, then ensure your health is always high, as even temporary dips in health (pollution from heating plants is a common cause) will reduce lifespan and result in older citizens dying off immediately. Having hospitals is also important for keeping health up and saving citizens from accidents or severe illnesses.

Since children are also put into orphanages if their parent goes to prison, you should also keep crime under control and ensure 100% employment all the time to minimize the number of criminals and thus orphans.

Finally, if you don't need the population, research the decrease natality tech (they are repeatable after some time) and keep an eye on your population. If there are no free flats to move into, then citizens stuck living with their parents or in a dorm will get upset and disloyal.
