How do grain silos work?
I built some grain silos for a distilery and I bought a bunch of crops for one of the silos, but the factory doesn't show any of the grain filling up in the inventory of the factory. The gain silo does say it is losing grain however and it does have a factory connection. Do silos automatically transfer grain I take it? Is it a bug that the factory info doesn't show that grain is being transfered?

if a forklift irect connector this balance with the factory
if its indirect forklift connection with cross you have to buy a forklift depot athen import fiel then buy some forklifts
i dont remind than grain silo use pipe or band despit it seem more apropriate and sure than distillery dont
maybe you just lack of electricity
anyway you have an output if the factory is producing
for the final you will know than a single silo is too much dozen of crop field
and if you auto buy import in distillery their is no point to have silo at all
the silo is just a storage for trains nothing else requiert such amounts

A direct passive connection silo-distillery is like it is the same factory - just an extension, so it does not show a store in the factory, until the silo is full in most cases.

for check the connection and be sure all will be safe you auto buy the minimal amount of crop in the silo if this amount is more when your truck unload you stop to pay until the stock become less and the factory will continue to work if you have a shortage with crop you ever make profit if you feed your shop or export

the factory will pull only what it needs (which it will only be as fast as the transfer rate on passive connections) the only way to force crops into the factory is with a forklift

In my experience, forklifts don't work very well with grain. There's too much of it.

another tester has confirmed that forklifts are perfectly able to handle goods movement. They are only a little slower than 100% efficient for some very productive factories, but without them you can not move goods actively so the efficiency is moot.

So is it better to have a grain silo connected or just to have resources deposited directly to the factory?

the optimal is to use a truck gare that feed both silo and factory
all of them linked with direct connection and forklift crossing
and optionnally a closed storage who can handle too the crops
tought not remind if the silo have multiple connections for forklifts

So have the silo directly connected to the factory but also have it connected to forklifts too?

You can also use this setup:
Factory >>> silo. If you only have one silo (unload truck directly in the silo. The factory pulls your needs out of the silo)
If you want to tie several silos to the factory, you need a forklift.
Factory >>> forklift garage >>> first silo
>>> second silo.
For even more silos, the forklift garage needs an extension.

Cargo doesn't 'push forward' without something to force it along...a Conveyor Engine, a Pumping Station, Forklifts, etc.

But it's working just fine. All cargo transfers have an "Area of Effect". The Distillery will try its own internal storage first...and if that's empty, then it'll see if any building directly connected to its inputs and take from those instead.

all the screenshhot show suboptimal patern
my opinion is make direct connection inbetween silo factory truckgare
because distillery and food factory have extrem production that a single truck at a time cannot absorb and the import is more again

another connection to the forklift garage that help a bit but is very slow
its basically a truck with 1ton load
that use a single factory entrence
whatever the connection number you link in the path all the forklift will make the queue at the shortest path both import and export stack at the same door
even you connected 4 way
actually forklit make sens only for export and import under 5T a day
like storage to chemical to plastic to electric to electronic its ok
and are far less eficient than truck gare
direct connection seem unlimited speed and load
so i guess in next version patch it will be a forklift change like multi entrence usage
because for now its a waste or a loose trap

I currently have a farm connected to a grain silo with the factory connection (no crossings) and then another silo connected to the first silo, which is then connected to a cloth factory (also no crossings) but the factory doesn't seem to want to pull and when the first silo and farm are full, they do not spill over into the second silo for some reason
the setup is like this:
Farm>Factory connection>Silo>Factory connection>Silo>Factory Connection>Cloth factory
I can't have two silos in a row without using forklifts or what?

So in the game there are passive and active buildings.
The factory pulls the goods out of the warehouse (when the internal warehouse of the factory is empty) and pushes the goods into the warehouse (when the internal warehouse is full) so a factory / farm / etc. are active.
a warehouse / silo / oil warehouse / open warehouse / closed warehouse / etc. are passive buildings, so you need a conveyor belt between two coal stores / between two silos forklift garage / between two oil stores a pump.
so it would be right for you
1- Farm >>> plant connection >>> silo >>> plant connection >>> cloth factory.
or
2- Farm >>> forklift crossing >>> silo 1 >>> factory connection >>> factory
>>> forklift crossing >>> silo 2 >>> factory connection >>> factory

Ah okay, thank you. The issue with forklifts are their low capacity, just one depot doesn't seem to cut it when moving for example grain to the factory and food back out to the warehouse. but i'll see if i can't remove a silo
