just FYI: its much more accurate to compare this game with tropico, not ottd.
if you want ottd-alike game then look for voxel tycoon
I just want to highlight that I appreciate the response directly from the developer.
At least an honest answer directly from the source.
👍👍👍
It would be nice if it happened for often.
To build a big, self-sufficient republic that's more than a single border town you have to invest hundreds of gaming hours. Can you find a dedicated partner who has that much time? Most multiplayer sessions range from a few minutes to 2 hours at most. Wow raids in the good old days took 6 hours, and even that was a stretch. It just isn't feasible with WSRS.
This game concept has a feasible multiplayer option and it is not that hard to imagine. Think of it as "Tropico in eastern Europe". Basically what you need it
- to divide map into sectors (smaller nations) and I can imagine up to 4 players to be easily able to play together. Obviously customs and border types would need to be equal, same as the nation shape (definitely not rng fiesta). But doable
- to trade; trading posts mechanics -> players would be able to research and build their own export warehouse over the customs (similar to pipeline connections now) and it would require confirmation of the second player after research. This way you would be able to build it and export resources their way; they would need to research and build similar building to export your way, too. Each of the players would start with 1 from each open, aggregate, container storage + pump with 1 tank connected (fuel/bitumen etc export) and electrical connection as well. Basically on start you would have one "customs area" in the middle of your borders; additional ones would be research-locked
- game setting would not be realistic and game speed would be standard, or selectable on setup. Remeber Knights and Merchants and its KaM remake? There were game speeds to select of peacetime times and wartime timer and it went from 1x to 3x for masters. I can totally imagine playing MP with experienced players on 2x-2,5x speed (standard faster time now is 3x), as pausing would obviously not be an option. You would be able to pay for things with money to speed things up, although your own construction setup would be really needed after all due to increasing transportational costs.
- game would obviously need its goal/finishing line. Inspired by Tropico 5, this could easily be the same mechanism - generated tasks consecutively from groups "easy", "medium" and "hard" that would be available till completion or with timer.
Easy: produce xyz of wood/crops/..., have xyz of people in your republic etc.
Medium: Have a steel mill/coal power plant; produce xyz of electricity/steel/iron/bauxite/aluminum, ...
Hard: Have a nuclear PP, build the largest ship in the game, manufacture 10 planes of xyz type, export fckton of fuel/electricity, aluminum; export vehicles of total value of at least n millions and so on. you could accumulate 1/3/10 points for these and hard tasks would be presented only 3 for each game and after the completion of last of them, game would end. Easy and medium tasks would be presented 3/2 at a time and would reappear randomly from the stack (only those not completed yet).
- MP could be cooperative (for playing with partner), so "just survive and finish tasks successfuly" with points shown in the end of how much each of you contributed (or with just "achieve total amount of points per team to win" as is in Tropico, or competitive that points would matter in the end.
Totally doable, if you would be able to save by agreement of all players and autosave would be each 10 minutes (just to be sure and prevent huge losses if crash would appear). You could continue the session next evening/day this way and eventually be able to finish it.
And for those extra hardcore MP players you COULD give them an option of playing realistic or with some features fro mit (vehicles coming from customs, no autobuy, ...)
In what good city builder you have MP? Almost in none, because is uselles. Waste of time and effort :)
Civilization is not a ciry builder like this at all etc :)
But especially for game like this is simply not possible, this is studio with 3 maybe max. 4 developers, which needs to fix a lot of basic things in game :)
Not even focusing on new content for a while I hope:) There is enough content in game, now after release would be time to polish the gameplay :)
And MP is great, not all MP need to be competitive frenetic actions. If you would have played Tropico series, it is kind-a citibuilding and nation-management. Same with Anno series. Same with Knights and Merchants of old days.
Basically a crossbreed of WRSR and Tropico is exactly a thing I am looking forward if that ever happens. No military conquests (maybe just for exports, no own troops and such), just an economical competition. Do you want to finish for money and have a head start? That costs more money even now and the further from customs, the more it costs. It would require knowledge and strategy ;)
And as a coop against the game/timer? Hell yeah!
