Halls of Residence: Do you use them? Where and why?
I'm trying to figure out the proper way to use them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but afaik once students finish their studies they will move to a flat whitin walking distance. This means they will be concentrated arround the hall of residence.

I provide transport for my students from their homes to the university. This way, once they finish their studies they spread evenly through my republic.

Therefore, under what situation should I use a hall of residence? Where should I place them?
And is it a good idea to use them at all? Since they concentrate my educated workers.

I built 5 outside my university figuring students would move there so they wouldn't have to commute. Think it makes sense for students coming from other cities. I did see 1 full and the other 4 empty when I had checked. Now all 5 have less then a dozen students all waiting to move out, but I'd need to build more houses for them first or finish the connection to the other city.

If lots of students are waiting for education they will move into dormitories and stay there until they reach education level 2.0. If there are free flats in walking distance they will move into new flats once they finished their degree. If there are no free flats around, you need to move them manually wherever you want or they are moved when you build new flats elsewhere and have auto populate from your own workers turned on.

Do you use them? Where do you build them, near university or elsewhere?

Best is to build them next to university or at least in walking distance to university. You need to provide some services as for flats for students living there because they have needs as workers have.

I only tried once to use them, no sense in my opinion, as far as I know it's used only by over 21 who did not reach 2.0 educational level yet. I never let my citizen be ignorant until 21
When I used I had to manually move them from flat to hall, I don't think they do it be themself, they just go away by themself if there free space in some flat

If you use them of course they should be close to university or headquarter of communist party

When I tried it, I built one next to the university. I had to manually move the students to the hall because they wouldn't move by themself. Once they got their degree, I had to move them out once again, manually.

Just like you I couldn't find sense on it, it doesn't work for what I'm intending to use it: In my mind, I want hostels to be used by far away students from the other side of the city, or a different town. And when you are done with your career, good luck with your life. All of this without me having to take them by the hand and guide them in every step :P

The whole thing of the walking distance should have nothing to do with residence halls imo. The way I see it now, it's just better to stick students to mass transit.

Lets say I have this village raising cattle in the middle of nowhere. In order to have future teachers for the local school, or medics for the hospital there is a train going to the university. Folks go to study every morning and once they get their degree they move to a nearby flat from their parent house and start working at the school/hospital.
If we put residence halls in the ecuation, I would have to move those local folks manually in and out, back to the village. Otherwise they would remain living in the dormies, or if they are lucky move to a flat near the university. And the village would end lacking teachers and doctors.

IMO students should move in and out of residence halls automatically. Once they finish their degree, they should go back the way they came. Not just in walking distance from the hostel, otherwise educated workers don't spread properly.

I hope someone can correct me.

This has been my experience.. They are completely worthless and require manual management.

I hope someone comes and teach us something we are missing. I really want hostels to work.

There is a place for dormitories IMO and I use them personally. But as this subject was discussed in the past and I discussed it with developer, there is a high chance something in this will be changed. Probably graduates will automatically move to whole map wherever schools or hospitals are in walking distance not only to walking distance to dormitories.

This will be great if implemented.

they are pretty useful.

when you are growing you can import citizens with dollar. then get them educated in school then place them in university halls of residence so they go to uni instead of work.

also when citizens graduate if they are in halls of residance they will relocated to any empty housing in entire map. Pretty useful i say.
