It should be a fairly easy fix is one reason why. Basically when you select something like a coal mine you would just need the "scout overlay" to be the size of the entire map. It should be clear why something like this should be part of the UI to anyone who didn't know about that resource map, and a third-party map shouldn't be required just to know where iron is (because frankly meticulously moving a little circle over the entire huge map is NOT an acceptable solution).

A geological office conducting surveys would be a better solution. Similar to how geologists worked in Settlers 2, only with a specialized Soviet Geological Institute building.

I'm fine with something like that too, but I'm not fine with "run a tiny circle back and forth over the whole map" or "use a jpeg of a map where someone did that for you" as the options.

I also wondered about a resource overlay (along with contour lines).
I found I could use the mini-map to highlight areas & jump to the red areas to speed up my search results.
The mesh seems to replace contour line in many instances but it could be a nice option for people who know how to read maps.

I like the variable yield factor of resource mines & I think tea_bushs' idea for geological survey would be much better than a Cities Skylines style overlay. Much more in keeping with the core game concepts.
