Are the Cantina upgrades necessary?
HotIS introduces Cantinas which can be used to earn upgrades for your BattleMechs.

Are these just a pay-to-win mechanic to make the game easier, or are you going to need them to beat the DLC missions? Do enemy mechs ever have the same upgrades?

Oh yes the Anti-PGI Jihadist collective conspiracy theories run deep

I don't use them at all.

They can make some pretty wild changes. Having an Atlas cruising around at near 60km/hr is nothing to sneeze at. Nut thats sinking all your upgrades just into speed. You can make it through the campaign no problem without them but you'd be missing out on some pretty silly builds as well as some really nice cash and equipment if you didn't do them.

Endgame, you get stuck with assault mechs. You could only upgrade every mech class except assault???…

most of the cantina upgrades have comically small values that barely make a difference. I'd estimate that even with an optimal cantina upgrade setup your mech is maybe 15-20% stronger at best. also dlc in a singleplayer game that adds new progression mechanics that enable you to get stronger is not pay to win. yes the dlc lets you get stronger than you can be without it but those upgrades are locked behind tedious mission farming. might as well say any dlc for a singleplayer game that increases your level cap is pay to win.

I guarantee you there is nothing in that DLC that will make the game easier than tweaking the difficulty settings that are included in the base game

Ironlegion was suggesting that if OP took issue with the modification system decreasing the game's difficulty they could just avoid using it on assault mechs as those are the only mechs viable endgame in vanilla generally speaking.

lol, ya ya. I apologize. It’s not a detailed comment on my part. My point was since endgame you’re stuck with assaults a good option would buff the other class mechs. So they could be more viable later game.

Upgrades are so costly, tedious to unlock, and barely beneficial there kinda useless. (Opinion based)

that is indeed a based opinion. the only one I consider a priority is the movement speed upgrade in an unmodded game because at least I feel that one.

For people who think I'm on some silly anti-PGI agenda, I didn't put a lot of time into carefully deciding upon the precise wording to use. In my experience, single-player and cooperative (PVE) games often have DLC that introduces new gear which is better in some way than the original gear you can get with no DLC.

There are many ways this can be implemented, but broadly speaking, there are two basic categories I see it fall into:

1. The DLC doesn't introduce anything new to challenge the player; thus, the upgraded gear shifts the game balance in the player's favor (whether or not the player just gets the gear immediately or has to earn it).

2. The DLC introduces something new to challenge the player; the upgraded gear helps the player deal with the increased level of challenge, without shifting the overall balance much in either direction.

The MW5 DLC introduces new mechs and weapons, which I would say generally falls into category 2 (doesn't give the player an edge) because the enemy can also use those new mechs and weapons. However, the Cantina upgrades sound to me like something that might give the player an edge, if the enemy doesn't use the same upgrades. However, for all I know, some of the DLC missions are so difficult that you'll need the upgrades just to beat them, or some of the enemy mechs will have the same upgrades that you'll get from the Cantina.

That's all I have to say about that, and I'll just block anyone who keeps trying to derail the thread (yes, I understand this doesn't stop you from posting, but I don't have to read it). Thank you to those who actually chimed in with their opinions on the balance of the Cantina gear.

Excellent Suggestion - blocking you now - nothing personal - just allergic to foolish unwise posts
