"MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is set in the BattleTech universe. The game starts in 3015 during the final decade of the Third Succession War, casting the player as a rookie mercenary MechWarrior rising from the ashes of a demolished mercenary unit. They are able to accept contracts from the various factions available in this time period. The campaign goes all the way up to 3049, just before the Clan Invasion."
Which to me, this screams that PGI originally intended for Clans to make an appearance in MW5 as probably the first piece of DLC, maybe even going along the lengths of the waves that took place during the invasion, because the first wave of Clans hit House Kurita, the
Rasalhague Republic and Commonwealth and the campaign has you right on the edge of House Kurita space when it concludes.
Mind you, HBS is run by the creator of Shadowrun and Battletech (at least it was, pre-Paradox), so I guess that shouldn't be very surprising. There's always a wiki though, where you can dive right into the lore and backstory of Battletech.
Edit: this is likely just an overlook from PGI's behalf as contracts aren't refreshed until you get at least five maybe six systems away from one conflict zone (usually enough to be in another conflict zone) before newer contracts are presented when you return to the previous zone.

That doesn't mean they could have broke it up into different DLCs and call them "expansions" anyone remember THAT word when it came to upcoming additions for games. Heck the Clan invasion is broken up into five different waves, I would wager that you can easily make five different expansions with for the Clan invasion.
