DLC 1 is the must have
2 and 4 are the nice to have, with 2 having the edge as it adds a lot of map assets and several new biomes.
Then optional, legend of the kestral lancers
Then if you have some spare money Call to Arms (this is by far adds the least to the game, unless you really want to use melee).
I've not got Rise of Rasalhague yet so can't comment on it.
The only melee mechs worth a damn are generally the ones that are fast enough to chase down their prey, which will usually be mechs smaller then themselves. Honorable mention to the Melee Cyclops, the one-eyed monster was given an equally devastating close range build to compliment Sleipnirs long range head chopping.
I don't like melee so I am not touching Call to Arms and nothing I have seen without mods would make me consider it.
The other two add some missions, some of which can be quite tough. But a decent value if you want to extend you playing.
I'll disagree with you on that, though I will freely admit that it takes some dedicated time getting used to how to make melee work in your favor. Against the 'armless' (catapults, stalkers, locusts, etc.) melee is a *huge* advantage.
I just wish melee attacks didn't damage *you* when you're the one making the attack.
