Do MWO builds work?
I've played MWO before with friends, but new to the single player games. Do the same builds work or do you have to build differently?

Should work.
You can get through the game basically with any builds you're willing to put up with.

But I figure you'd have more fun if you explored your options more and tried out different builds.

Mechlab in vanilla is completely different to MWO. Thus a lot of Mechs that wouldn't get a look in e.g. Awesome 8Q are really powerful.

Ya, the 8Q is like tailor made perfect for either a command mech or just give to the AI. The ai is fairly good with PPCs and the 8Q can almost shoot constantly which is perfect for them.

They should work, but you will need to install a mod like Yet Another Mechlab to open up the mechlab to the same level as in MWO.
By default you're only limited to switching out weapons and equipment. But things like engine rating, type and internal structure and ferro fiberous armor is locked to the chassis.
In addition the game starts in 3015, so a lot of the advanced tech and weapons present in MWO will not be available from the start. But you can come upon occasional lostech through reawards and drops. Plus rare and hero type mechs can appear in markets which can have some advanced lostech installed.

I'll have to try the 8Q. Never liked awesome because I seem to drop them in 5 seconds. I always stuck to Highlanders because they seem to take a beating except for the arms.

One very nice thing about Mechwarrior 5 is it is really possible to play lighter mechs even at higher weight missions. You need to adopt a much different playstyle, of course, but I love using my Firestarter on missions. As the mechs get out of the light range even if they are fast their bigger hit box makes them more vulnerable. So don't limit yourself to just trying to upweight your mechs. Unless you just love running around with the Steiner scout lance. And that is fine too.

Being one of the few Mechs that can mount 3x PPC's that can fire them consistently and above all can do this in a stock config really pays off, especially when given to AI. It's basically a cheap and inexpensive way to have a reliable tanky and ranged Mech.

Just remember to take some rear armour, getting dunked on by a Behemoth with dual AC20's isn't fun ;)
