Anyone know what 'Fatal Error!' means?
I've gotten the game recently & love it. But gotten three crashes today while playing in co-op, only titled "Fatal Error!". I only have the option to click 'OK', where the game closes. Anyone know what this translates to? Maybe an option I have to fiddle with in my graphics or game settings?

Cheers in advance.

I've a "Fatal Error" Hero Phoenix Hawk.

It's damaged. When I try to repair, "Fatal Error" every time. It's the only case I've seen myself.
This special Hero Mech is kept in cold storage for nostalgia purposes.

To be fair, I have a bunch of mods, so I'm not surprised.

That's interesting. I've not got any mods myself; just got the game with all DLC yesterday and started playing today. Happened again whilst playing solo, seems to just happen at random, as some happen during missions, some in menus & once while just walking around the ship.

Fatal error means that the error was fatal for the game process. This isn't a specific error, and can be caused by any number of problems. The only way to track it down is to try to recreate the situation and see if the error occurs again.

You could also check the Windows event log to see if there are any corresponding warnings of errors that occur at the same time. For example: if your display driver crashes at the same time that the game closes.

Hmm sounds like you once had YAML installed which is how that Phoenix Hawk is in your Cold Storage however you probably uninstalled YAML at some point and since the hero variant (and its Pilot for that matter) are exclusive to Epic Games and Microsoft Store copies of MW5, the game's trying to look for data related to this mech and not finding it thus resulting in a crash.

It's a crash occurrence of UE4. More than likely you've encountered it before with other UE4 games. It's some doo-hickey wot-sit between UE4 and (more commonly) RADEON cards.

I've taken a look at the windows event log, and it seems to be claiming I'm getting "Fault 0xc0000005" with "Faulting application path: F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries\MW5Mercs\Binaries\Win64\MechWarrior-Win64-Shipping.exe".

Trying to google it but there seems to be a lot of broad strokes, rather than solutions for MechWarriors. Any suggestions?

Further update: the event viewer doesn't seem to get new logs now when the 'Fatal Error!' crash occurs, so this is all I currently have to go on. The crashes seem to be almost random (don't always occur when repeating behaviours), but more common when moving through menus on the overworld. They are frequent enough that they can be a pain when playing in co-op and solo, however.

Current circumstances I've had it occur in:
- Walking around on the 'Leopard'
- Sitting on the 'Home Screen'
- Looking at locations on the star map
- Selecting a contract
- Confirming travel to a world on the star map
- Watching the cutscene of warping in to a new location
- Any end-mission screen (reviewing salvage, damages stats etc)

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm really loving the game and this is the only thing holding me back from enjoying & immersing myself properly.

Most FE I have received tended to be from a mod. But I have also gotten FE crashes without mods running.

If it not a mod alright ask for some hardware specs? Not running like Ray Tracing or DLSS?

Sure thing, cheers for asking :)

HARDWARE
-------------
CPU: Intel i7-9700K @3.60GHz (8 CPUs)
RAM: 32GB
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 (drivers updated as of 20th of March)

At the moment I have every graphical option on as I figured the computer could handle it. Ray Tracing is enabled & maximised, DLSS is on and set to 'Balanced', as that's what it defaulted to when I installed the game.

I'm hesitant to believe either Ray Tracing or DLSS is what's causing the problem as I believe my PC should be able to handle the options graphically, and the fatal errors tend to happen on the menus or overworld, rather than in missions. I'll try testing without one, then the other/both to see if it's affecting my play. Would definitely appreciate if you have any insight on the above though.

Ray Tracing and DLSS are not well supported in MW5 and have been known to cause issues.
Latest string of drivers for Nvidia cards in 3000 series (as well as some AMD cards) have for a better term, been a complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I'd even consider rolling back drivers if you have no luck with switching off DLSS.
tank16365 Mar 22, 2023 @ 3:14pm
I had this issue and for me it was Ray Tracing. It only happened a few times, when I first got the game and I just maxed the graphics out, and later on a random update reactivated it.
Vaan Tythonus Mar 24, 2023 @ 2:57pm
After a few days of testing, it looks like switching off Ray Tracing has completely removed the issue for me. Cheers all! Very much appreciate the patience & advice :)
