Finding the actual mechs that can be equipped with them is another matter entirely.
Might not be the most tonnage efficient for sure, but it's one of the only ways to get above max armor/structure, along with cantina upgrades.
Yet this mod you can just order whatever you want. So bye bye randomness.

And I'll be honest, the dps on some of the melee weapons is too good for me to ignore.
The melee weapons are excellent if you have the speed to make use of them. Jump jet mechs with melee weapons are practically a playstyle unto themselves. The AI isn't quite so smart with them, mostly just opportunistic with their attacks, but my melee mechs outclass even my LRM boats at their best moments for sheer damage done in a mission.
Jump jets are usually good for mobility and ambushes, but with a melee mech, you can use them for rapidly changing direction, or quick hops to cover distance quickly when making attacks. It plays very differently if you're actually focused on it, but obviously requires the rarer combination of both a mech that has jumpjets and a proper melee hardpoint.
The key to melee is to never miss a leg day and aim for the head. But later you can go absolutely crazy with this, and start abusing MASC or Supercharger with jump jets momentum. This is one of the most fun way of gameplay that you can have in MW5. You need to move and use terrain to your advantage, always keep an eye if your allies legged someone by random to finish it off with swift hit. Some of the melee weapons can one shot full HP heavy or assault mechs if they missed a leg day. Charger with melee is absolutely mental. The melee sound design alone worth it.
