Knowing where to get melee weapons
I'm having a hard time figuring where to get specific components without having to travel all over the galaxy until I find them

Do you have the DLC, Call to Arms?

Yes

The weapons seem to be easy to find in my experience. Almost any time a shop has weapons, it tends to have some melee weapons too.

Finding the actual mechs that can be equipped with them is another matter entirely.

Waste of tonnage, time and C-bills

I never bother with melee. Even tho, I always look up every weapon available on every planet and I only bother to buy melee weapons with are quality 4 or 5. Just in case I ever want to build a completely sub-optimal mech at one point in time.

Its all RNG, stop looking for specific things and just focus on making bank. Check stores everywhere you go and buy what you want that's for sale. Just be sure not to over spend. The more one obsesses over not finding something that is randomised the more you will enjoy it.

Unpopular opinion, I find knuckle weapons, not the arena versions, to be okay. Granted, I use them for additional armor/structure and not for their attack. Also depends on how much left over tonnage to use.

Might not be the most tonnage efficient for sure, but it's one of the only ways to get above max armor/structure, along with cantina upgrades.

I agree with Pete, Eagle, and Wayz.

Yet this mod you can just order whatever you want. So bye bye randomness.

Melee is the biggest disappointment in this game. They didnt do nearly enough with it. Only a few mechs can even mount melee. None can duel wield.

You know what? I completely understand. But it's not like I intend to focus too much on melee. I just want to get one or two mechs with melee capabilities and go ham with swords and hammers. Plus, I'm not gonna bother trying to melee lighter mechs. Too fast to really close the distance with heavy and assault mechs.

And I'll be honest, the dps on some of the melee weapons is too good for me to ignore.

The melee weapons are excellent if you have the speed to make use of them. Jump jet mechs with melee weapons are practically a playstyle unto themselves. The AI isn't quite so smart with them, mostly just opportunistic with their attacks, but my melee mechs outclass even my LRM boats at their best moments for sheer damage done in a mission.

Explain this playstyle you mentioned

Jump jets are usually good for mobility and ambushes, but with a melee mech, you can use them for rapidly changing direction, or quick hops to cover distance quickly when making attacks. It plays very differently if you're actually focused on it, but obviously requires the rarer combination of both a mech that has jumpjets and a proper melee hardpoint.

Melee weapons has been a sleeper for a long time and it seems like most people still have no clue on how to use them properly. Because they fear to waste mass for suboptimal mech build. It was strong in vanilla as is, but even more OP with mods like YAML which is adding quircs to mechs and other changes significantly buffing melee gameplay as a whole.

The key to melee is to never miss a leg day and aim for the head. But later you can go absolutely crazy with this, and start abusing MASC or Supercharger with jump jets momentum. This is one of the most fun way of gameplay that you can have in MW5. You need to move and use terrain to your advantage, always keep an eye if your allies legged someone by random to finish it off with swift hit. Some of the melee weapons can one shot full HP heavy or assault mechs if they missed a leg day. Charger with melee is absolutely mental. The melee sound design alone worth it.
