some of the dlc's would require that since they are mostly time gated. but some of the stuff would just be added to you playthrough

Yes and no. It depends on what year your save is at, as almost all of the DLC campaigns are time gated, since they are based on time specific events within Battletech lore.

But, if you get Heroes of the Inner Sphere, it adds a new mode: Career. It's mostly the same as Campaign, but conflict zones are differently levelled, and there are some more, and none of the main campaign missions.

But the important thing is: You can import an existing campaign save (or heck, even a career save) and start a career in 3015 with all your C-Bills, mechs, equipment, pilots, etc. But it resets your quests and reputation.

The DLC's are time gated??

this sounds really confusing

legend of the kestrel lancers, the dragon's gambit, rise of rasalhague, and solaris showdown feature quest chains that only are available within a certain in game time frame. the earliest kestrel lancers has to be started in 3026 iirc and if you wait too long is permanently missed on that save file. every dlc with a new questline has a career mode start option to take you directly to the start of that questline if desired so even if your file is past kestrel lancers your new file would be able to start it immediately.

What's so hard?????

Most of the DLC' add mini-campaigns. So if your in-game clock/calendar is past the trigger date - the mini campaign will NOT start

HOWEVER any extra bits that came with the DLC WILL apppear in game

there might be a few special mechs only available as dlc campaign mission rewards but outside of that yeah any new mechs and weapons are available without having to start a new save. if you bought all the dlc now and loaded a file that previously had none you'd start seeing Crusaders and binary lasers in short order among other things.

None of the time gated DLCs have any mechs that are exclusive to their questlines. Even the Otomo mechs from Dragon's Gambit aren't exclusive, they are just really rare.

see this is why I used the word might. haven't played the dlc campaigns so genuinely didn't know. thanks for clarifying.

i think it would be nice you can buy all the dlc parts even after the mini campaign finish right?

Iam playing this game many years now so I am sure I have missed the timing if I continue...

I would just like to be able to buy all parts if I get the DLC

you can. all the weapons, items, and mechs from the DLC are available even if you don't start a new file and even if your file missed the DLC campaigns entirely.
