which mech/battletech game has the best music
including old and new games.
I watched a video where the author thought mechwarrior 2 had the best music.

Subjective?

Define best?

There all really great music soundtracks.

That is why I asked for ideas.

What is your favourite -
maybe that is a better question.

Duuno - all in game music annoys me - I turn off the music in every game

I am checking out Mech Commander 2 music at present -that seems pretty thematic.
Some of the tracks are a little loud though.

Catchy tune.
I Listened ;
reminds me of
The Bitmap Brothers title,
The Chaos Engine and The Chaos Engine 2 .
Might not -been years since I played those games.

Maybe a lot of early game titles had similar sounds -

Really is subjective though some games like MW3 have a soundtrack as in singular. They really did have only one music file on repeat.
Though nothing will top this glorious cheese! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exKVwnOyEEA

Correction, has 5 tracks when you include the Pirate's Moon in the package.

FM, PSG, wavetables, MIDI and other things...

Essentially, you're talking about the era were the entry level consumer musical product was the AdLib Standard for PC... which was very Yamaha FM...

Then there's other things, ala Commodore's SID chips, and so on. Lotta unique chip sounds, but they're all 'electronic instruments' so...

Mean it did technically but they still played them all meshed together on repeat.

Problem is, a lot of the OSTs of prior Mechwarrior games are more thematically linked to the mission, which renders the emotional experience of listening to songs apart from them a bit of a void; some of the tracks of Mechwarrior 2 are very similar droning drum beat ambience, and kinda blend together without mission parameters to set them apart. The 'standout' tracks earn that OST its reptutation.

I've personally gone through all the Mechwarrior OSTs recently and I can't really 'crown' MW2, that's rose coloured glasses for most people, as half the tracks on that are genuinely not engaging. Heck, the Heavy Gear OST has more notable tracks overall and it's got less songs.

Mechwarrior 4 is alright, has some good tracks.

Mechwarrior 5 actually has a really decent set of tracks, especially as the DLC goes on.

Some of the MWO stuff is... rather bland and bad. Some of it surprisingly good, but too sparse to really comment on.

The worst OST of all is Mechcommander 1, as its bitcompressed to hell and back, not a good experience and compositionally weak to boot.

Mech Assault 1/2 have seemingly good OSTs, to boot.

While true, that's a single-track 'experience', not a single track; I've been playing with some music mods and they mash a number of tracks in sequence, doesn't mean they're all the same song XD

I have not checked Mech Assault music yet.
I found 'khinsider music' showcases some of the music my replies have listed.

And I agree the vanilla music in Mech 5 is good.
