Are any DLC's worth it for a newbie?
Haven't played a Mech Warrior game since 3 many years ago, and see this is on sale. Is there anything I should avoid, is there and essential DLC that adds a lot to the game? Workshop things that are considered the standard for the essential experience?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

the dlcs are all just okay. i would not recommend getting them unless you plan to go extensively into modding or really enjoy MW5 overall. that's not to call them bad, but at the pricepoint asked it's far more down to personal value placed on mw5 overall.

If you miss being able to change engine and stuff, consider YAML, very popular. Best to give it a play first - game is still ok without mods.

So it sounds like I should just give the core game a go first. Makes sense, thanks for the help :)

It is almost ESSENTIAL to get Heroes of the Inner Sphere, as it adds a lot of things (features, equipment, mechs, etc.) that should've been in the base game from the start. Then you'd better get Kestrel Lancers and Rise of Rasalhague, and only after those you might consider buying the rest just to complete the collection: Call to Arms, Dragon's Gambit, Solaris Showdown.

Many people will instantly come blabbing about YAML, but be mindful - this mod alters a lot of things and requires digging into to understand some details, even before starting the game - all the mod options and what they do specifically. Play a little bit vanilla and then you'll have some idea of what might be improved upon in your opinion, then give the "most subscribed/downloaded" mods page a glance (here on the Workshop or on Nexusmods) to see if anything sounds good to you. However, also take into the account that not all the mods may be updated to fit the latest version of the game and might cause serious conflicts and crashes. Workshop mods tend to screw up sometimes and not update correctly, so manual attention to mod management is very much advised.

The Jumpship Edition has Heroes of the Inner Sphere, and the Kestral Lancers. So sounds like that bundle is a decent starting point given the discount then. Rise of Rasalhague isn't part of it, but the bundle is a pretty good deal in my currency atm, so even without that, would you say that's a good start?

I'll keep from modding for now, you make an excellent point about not knowing what it would affect until after playing for a bit.

There's also this somewhat obscure bundle hiding inside the description page: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/36601/MechWarrior_5_Mercenaries_DLC_Upgrade_Bundle/ It has two more DLCs, but comes without the base game, so I can't know for sure if the pricing is adequate when you add things up in different regions.

That bundle is a good price, but without the base game puts it just out of my price range for now. But thanks for all your help. I think I will buy the Jumpship one now, sounds like it should be a good deal before the sale ends!

I confidently recommend to try MW5 without DLCs. The base game has enough content to entertain you during first 30+ hours to pass the main quest in Campaign.

Then, only then you will appreciate DLCs, new biomes, new mecs, weps and etc.

I tried MW5 with 4 dlcs a year ago, got overwhelmed by missions and equipment.
Recently as newbie again I've passed the base game only, but with QoL mods. And that was pure joy. The base game is very neat and pretty balanced.

If DLCs are on sale, then buy them and disable in Steam Library to try later.

I ended up getting the bundle with a couple DLC's, but will keep this in mind if I find it's too much to start with.

i would like to add that there are various groups that play co op and would gladly show you the ropes on building mechs and other things

I've been through 2 DLC main mission questlines (Kestral Lancers and Rise of Rashalhague) and I think the quests are worth the purchase as they were very interesting and enjoyable to me. I also recommend you get the Solaris DLC, for the only fact that you can fight/earn money in the industrial hubs. Heroes of the inner sphere have some interesting missions scattered throughout the map.
