Is First Person joystick + mouse possible?
I'm moving into PC from playing MC5 on a console. I got used to the first person controls with the gamepad, so I worked on mapping a left-hand throttle with a joystick hoping that it would make the transition easier. The stick works like a tank throttle, and I can't get the hang of it. I see that there is a "First Person Mode" on the PC as well, so I tried to use it like I did on the console. No joy.

I've tried a few remaps, but it's not working out. I dove into the GameUserSettings.ini file to see what I could find. There are some entries that seem relevant:
InputTypeToAxisKeyList=(AxisName="JoystickThrottle",Scale=1.000000,Key=Throttle_Axis2)
InputTypeToAxisKeyList=(AxisName="ControllerThrottle",Scale=1.000000,Key=Gamepad_LeftY)

I think the first person mode is made specifically for a controller. But is there a way I can trick it into thinking my joystick is a controller? There is no Throttle_y like on the gamepad (which I'm trying to emulate), but can I invent that term and insert it instead of the Axis_2?

I know this is a stretch, but I can't think of any other way to map my joystick to work in this particular mode. Maybe I'm just plunging further than the game allows?

Any suggestions would be amazing.

One more thing: I can use WASD in the First Person Mode, and I can also use the Hat buttons on my T.16000 because they are xy buttons on the map.

There is also "mouse_y" and "mouse_x" in the .ini file. Can I trick the game into thinking my stick is a mouse?

These may all be ridiculously stupid questions, but this is my first go in PC gaming.

My advice: stop indulging in this perverted act of grafting bad controls and play with KB&M on PC like a normal human being.

If you still wish to desecrate your own comfort just Google it or put in the search bar here the word "HOTAS" - the world of joystick weirdos awaits.

you can also just hook up your controller to your computer (both xbox and ps controllers work) and play that way

Thanks to both of you. As I said, I have the HOTAS figured out, and the controller, but I couldn’t get the combination of them.

I ended out using joytokey and mapped the joystick axes to the wasd keys and voila! Now I can play in First Person mode with joystick + mouse and not a controller.

I hope this helps someone else out.

I can’t believe you’d scold me for using a stick, but not for going full on arcade style with First Person Mode rather than “traditional” mech control mode! Shame. . .

first time I played mechwarrior on pc was mech3 and that was with a microsoft pro flight stick, complete with the vibration for footsteps.....such an amazingly underrated game.

Could have been worse - wanting to use a trackball

Is it worth using HOTAS in MW5? I have X52 Pro here but never bothered with it, I noticed my pilot in game uses a HOTAS in his cockpit seat....

KB&M just works fine and feels good.

I don't believe it is worth it

If I had rudder pedals I'd probably set up those to turn with, but use KB + Mouse for everything else. Had a similar setup years ago on an older MW game, worked good then.

I use an X52 and enjoy it. It is my preferred setup. My throttle is set for forward and reverse with the mid point at just below 50%. Works fine for me.

Back in the old mechwarrior days, I tried using joystick in left hand for turning, and mouse in right for torso, and I persisted with that at least through the first 2 games. My main problem was throttle, as well as simply being about making independent controlled movement with both hands/arms at same time (like trying to rub you tummy while patting your head). Although I got better, I felt I was constantly battling to retain control, particularly in short range skirmishes.

Later I got a joystick that allowed you to twist for rudder control, and I used the twist to control left/right on the torso. I achieved better results with that, but it only really worked well for short range, because the torso aiming wasn't precise enough for anything else.

I like the thought of using a joystick, to make the controls more like a mech cockpit, but keyboard/mouse works best by a mile. I would though like to try joystick for turning, and VR headset with head movement controlling torso rotation/tilt. Perhaps someone here has tried that (and I'm willing to bet it doesn't work nearly as well as you'd think).

OK couple of points

This isn't the 'old mechwarrior' and just because there was a feature in an older title does not set a precedent for this title.

As mechs are not REAL - how would anyone actually know what is a 'real' mech cockpit.

Printed, Bound and Published Toilet paper and in game art work (in this title or older) prove nothing

I have no idea what feature you are talking about, I'm just saying in the earlier mechwarrior games, because I used a joystick a lot at that point in time, I used that. You can use a joystick in any mechwarrior game, though it might take a workaround or 2.

You see part of the mech cockpit and the joystick in this game, have you never noticed? So why are you trying to say that isn't how the mech is controlled in the game? While you're thinking about that, how many real life vehicles are controlled from inside with a mouse and a keyboard, compared to some sort of joystick?

Honestly pete, after interacting with you just a couple of times, I've decided to stop. The day you understand why, you will be a happier person.

Thanks for the unwanted pop psychology session. I'll stick to the professionals

As posted previously.
1) just because something was in MW2 to 4 does not set a precedent that requires the devs of MW5 or higher to match.
2) The visual representation of the cockpit is an artist's impression - the same goes for the ridiculous 'novels' it's all in the mind of the creator.
3) So you can imagine what you want and there is no 'offical' cockpit layout. And anything is possible in science FICTION
