Mech loadouts
I played this when it first released and it was sort of meh. I've decided to return to it for another shot. I have several of the YAML mods installed.

Is there a way to unlock the mech loadouts to essentially whatever I want as long as it's not over tonnage? For example, I tried an instant action mission, and weapon types were all locked to certain areas of the mech. Left arm HAD to be an LRM 10, right arm HAD to be an AC10, etc.

What's the mod that's supposed to unlock all of that so I have more options and control over loadouts, or is it even possible?

(I tried searching, but Steam was acting goofy)

Edit: I was able to find another thread talking about free weapon customization that explained that YAML mods are supposed to do this, but apparently mine do not, as I have them installed [and enabled], but I have no customization options.

Have you updated those mods, at least, though?

It's not quite as restricted as you think. Mechs have hardpoints for ballistic, missile, or energy based weapons. So for your example, the right arm could instead house an AC2, AC5, LBX10 or machine gun. There are also sizes for each hardpoint that limits the max size of the installed weapon.

YAML adds more hardpoints and more mech variants, and gets rid of the hardpoint size limitation (so you can put any size weapon in so long as you have room in your mech).

There may be mods that unlock things further, but that should give you all the customisation you need.

They are, as far as I can tell.

I guess I'll need to mess around with it more.

Thanks.

It's entirely possible you've also installed another mod that messes up YAML.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe YAML also unlocks the single ECM hard-point restriction that you used to have with MW4, MWO and MW5-Vanilla. Now you can install ECM equipment in any slot, and in any mech variant.

Make sure that on the main menu on the right side you do NOT have the top green checkbox ticked. As that will lock a whole load of the customisation options that YAML provides.

Also make sure you also look at Advanced on the mech loadout.

But also know that a laser slot can only have laser weapons and a balistic can only have ballistic weapons. YAML doesn't change this. It only makes it so slots that before couldn't hold more than an S-Laser can now hold fe an L-Laser if the mech part has enough slots avail.

Unless you have an omnimech chassis, harpoints are limited by weapon type. An omnimech allows any weapon type in any available hardpoint, while non omnimechs only allow one type of weapon per hardpoint. So my atlas can only equip lasers in one arm and the CT, but my dire wolf can equip anything anywhere. You just need to have enough tonnage and crit slots to fit the weapon. Pay attention to the message that appears when you try to equip something else. If it says "not enough slots" then check how many crit slots the weapon you want takes. Not every mech can equip a heavy large assault laser in the arms for instance, because not every mech has enough room to fit the 7 (I think?) crit slots it would take.

ECM, BAP, Jump Jets, MASC and SuperCharger can be installed in general crit slots (using TT rules, such as max. amount of JJs is based on Mech top speed, SuperCharger can only go to a component with an engine part etc)

OP: what you want (install any type of weapon in any type of weapon slot) is possible, but without extensive work, the weapon models would not reflect the actual weapons - for example, if you install an AC20 into a missile hardpoint, it will have the default missile model of that hardpoint (which can be anything from 2-missile to 20-missile weapon model). It'd be ugly af :) Plus Ballistic weapons convergence might be off.
But yeah, it's entirely possible. Maybe as a cheat mod option in YAML with lots of warnings :)
