Does someone use "chain fire"?
I can't see the usecase where I would need that.

If you set both melee attacks to chain fire, you can essentially get two melee attacks out faster by double clicking the button. Can't say I've scientifically measured it, but it seems to make enough of a difference that I now usually set things up that way and make use of that strategy.

HEAT MANAGEMENT. always alpha striking will shut you down and get you dead in a heartbeat. Unless you config a mech with very low heat output. That usually means low dmg... I have an ANH-1A and X. both have dual LBX-10 CUs and either a pair UAC 5s or AC5-BFs. backed with 2 med pulse and a flamer (giggles). i can sustain that fire rate for short periods, eventually i have to set for chain fire so i dont over heat. But yeahhhhhhh the initial dmg sustainability is sweet. Then you got the laser vomit....youll get 1 or 2 alphas, then you will shut down if you dont exercise fire/heat management aka chain fire.

the hero? i pilot that one a lot. i swapped the energy mounts to large chem lasers. isnt that big of a hit to damage, and you get much better cooling out of it, even swapping some heatsinks for chem ammo.

the melee weapon is the main weapon, anyway ;D

All the time.

It's really the only way to mitigate heat from energy weapons. And if you want to make AI light mechs spaz-out and run away, try chain firing four or even six streak srm's - chain firing on weapons groups 1 and 2 (mouse 1 and 2). This works really well with YAML, but I'm not sure if this works with Vanilla.

In any case, you just trill mouse 1 and 2 keys, (like trilling piano keys) which produces a continuous stream of missiles - all locked on to the target.

Enemy light mechs will try to get the heck out of there.

You can also do the same thing with dual or quad Light AC's. Examples: Jagger mech JM6-S or JM6-DD with quad LAC-5 and LOTS of ammo. Install two LAC-5's in each arm set to chain fire weapons groups 1 and 2 plus alpha strike (w/o chain fire) on weapons group 3 (middle mouse button / wheel) providing a real nasty sniping configuration. Note, you cannot alpha strike with multple ACs without overheating - a relic nurf from the MWO days - but you CAN do it with LACs (MWO doesn't have LACs)

Ghost heat is in MW5? I've run 4x lbx-10, 4x ac20, 4x uac 5, 4x uac 10 and *never* noticed ghost heat while alpha striking. Do the mods remove it or...?

I use chain fire when im surrounded by a large number of weak targets. Or, like with my old Nightstar build, id fire my quad ERPPCs in chain fire or pairs.

I've never seen ghost heat nor ever heard anybody playing MW5 mention it before. It has been years, I'm sure people would have spread that info around.

As far as I know ghost heat only exist in MWO and is a balance mechanism.
