Not really, that kind of attitude limits the draw of a series, forever condemning it to be niche and never allowing it to grow beyond what it is, and slowly wither away as the old fans drift away from it, causing it to languish until it dies.
Now, that's not to say you can FORGET the old fans while reaching out to the new ones, but especially where controls are concerned in games, if you don't try for more than one option, you are curtailing the size of the audience you can have.
Sometimes, it IS for good reason, but as cRPGs have shown in the last few years, even things with a point and click interface can be done cleanly and effectively with a controller as with a keyboard and mouse.
What kind of salvatory NEW fans are you talking about? You do realise there are also NEW fans that pick up and play stuff on PC too, right? This simple fact instantly makes your grandiose "languish until it dies" argument invalid.
In addition, just to note something on the side - appeasing console players is an old known tactic because the publishers and/or devs want to perform as much cashgrab as they can, and the big juicy console gaming market full of lowest-common-denominator-people ready to empty their wallets always looks irresistibly appetising. The sentiment of "they just want to bring the game experience to everyone" sounds nice and so wholesome, especially from their marketing team, but you know - it's good practice to take it with a grain of salt... yesss, a grain the size of a big spacious house :]
I have noticed quite frequently on my PC with a controller that when I hit X to launch the mission that it doesn't launch and it doesn't even act like I pressed the button.
The work around I have found is to click to switch mechs in a bay but pick the mech that is there already, or any other mech for that matter.
