too but...
Then came Mechwarrior 5 Mercs.
Got it. Tried it - didn't have the same glow that the 90's games had. Play it every now and then now - just can't seem to get back into it even though - every now and then I play it some more but it just doesn't have the same vibe as the 90's games had.
Really loved MW4 back in the day it was my favourite game for a long while never played much of the older ones besides a bit of 3 and mechcommander 2. Lets not even talk about MW online. I heard that mods make MW5 actually good what to be honest is the only reason I am considering giving 5 a chance
There's stuff been added related to FedCom Civil War in game files as well.
With the exception of HBS's Battletech, which is the sole computer version that retains the old-school turn-based tactics and deep strategy layer, the franchise seems to be going in the wrong direction. Wrecking mechs is fun, and doing it in the first person is really fun, but if that is all there is, it gets boring fast. In MW5, a couple of sixpacks to the rear arc of any mech is all it takes for a kill. That is just depressing. There is very little strategy involved in any of the shooters; MW3 was the first of the shooters, and it had no strategy at all. Ditto MW4, though the Solaris VII sideline quest was absolutely a blast, and hiring a real sports caster to do the arena commentary audio was brilliant.
Even though MW5 does have a thin strategy layer, it is probably just a distraction for the target demographic they are trying to appeal to, which to me seems to be 12 year olds with ADD. Don't misconstrue me, I will still shell out for the next iteration of the game when the studios figure out what to do with all the IP they have licensed. I just hope we get to see the Clan invasion. And yeah, I know you can get that with several mods, and kudos to the modders for bringing it in. But unlike other studios that actually support modders, this studio seems to be only going through the motions. Each new DLC breaks way more mods than if the studio actually did care about the modding community. Honestly, it boils down to "Do I run this mod to get access to clan tech, only to have it break with the next patch, or do I bide my time and wait for the DLC?" My time has value, and tweaking mods after every patch is a terrible waste of my time.
Roadmaps set expectations and expectations can lead to disapointment. I prefer getting surprised by announcements. :)
But, of course, when a project is done and done. Please, don't leave us in the dark.
I barely even keep up with gaming news now. Makes finding new games more fun.
The open support and freedom to mod will always get respect from me though.
But PGI is still active in the MechWarrior scene. The CEO Russ Bullock announced in an interview with NoGutsNoGalaxy that a new single player / co-op standalone MW game is in the works, and will be announced later this year. So yes, thankfully Mechwarrior is still showing a pulse, and fingers crossed the next game will introduce our favorite tribal buddies, the clans.
PGI has made statements before that they'd love to add in the clans to MW5 but that a DLC would not do them justice. So the Clans will not see the light of day in MW5. If you want Clan mechs there are two mods out there you can check out, Clan Invasion Mod by Templar and Yet Another Clan Mech by the YAML Crew.
If we see any more DLC for this game before the launch of their next title that Russ has confirmed is in the works, it would most likely be something like a Solaris VII DLC.
