I thought that may be the case, a shame as I do not like assaults, I think heavy is the sweet spot for MW gameplay.

Yes I agree, and I would probably say medium to heavy is where I had the most fun, around 50 to 60ish tons seems to create the most interesting choices and gameplay.
Of course AI is the downfall of the game, when the only Mech you can build for your lance-mates is 400+ armor and the most basic weapons, it pretty much kills a lot of the strategy and complexity.
Bruh, I gave 4 UAC/5 to my Annihilator and it destroys everything.
Because guns are heavy compared to lasers and so you end up with not much armor.
There are some good/great AC and ballistic focused mechs out there. There’s a fast crab that can rock two AC5s at 50 tons. The victor basilisk at 80 can take two lbx10. The hero hunchback GI is even great with a gauss. The hero wolverine smashes; just one AC, but it’s where most of my damage comes from on that guy. There are loads. You can even get SIX light rifles on a 45 ton blackjack.
But canons are big. If you insist on multiple large canons you simply have to go heavy.
