Some lights cab carry plenty flamers or arms to make a difference. Ideally you want them to be 100mph+, more the better.
That's very true. Also AI is not exactly amazing at handling them, they can't really be scouts or spotters, instead they just run around to eventually get punched into next Tuesday by the assault or something
UM-AIV carries an Arrow IV and canonically has been used to launch a tactical nuclear warhead. Arrow IVs w/ Davy Crockett rounds aren't in MW5 but the ragequitting would be amusing to read about.
More conventionally, there is a canonical AC/20 Urbie. And later on in the setting (3054, but probably in some mods that extend the timeline) there are Hollanders running around with Gauss rifles.
For MW5, perhaps the most notable light to consider actually using would be the Spider hero. Put machine guns on it and it's actually a reasonable pick for demolition missions, because ballistic weapons do extra damage to structures and you can continually fire the machine guns while running through a base faster than the defenders can catch you. Just keep moving at speed rather than smashing *through* buildings, since you really don't want to get hit if you're piloting a Spider...
Likes of the Commando and Javelin heavily outgun most Mediums in game.
Firestarter can solo last mission of Campaign
Seems like a you issue.
Not all Lights are meant to be recon or dealing with small fry. There's quite a few Lights designed around skirmishing and harassing much larger targets with some even meant to act as fire support, it's just these designs never seem to ever make it into video games.
I ran almost exclusively a medium mech (soloing) in MWO - All I could do was hit and run mostly, Prey on damaged mechs bigger than myself - Or go after the light mechs probing my teams lines.
Add to this - light mechs are not for newbies either.
In MW5 - I do not use light mechs at all.... Except for Starting Game Mech, The mission that has a 50 ton limit, and infiltration.
Light mechs were not designed to normally duke it out with heavier mechs. Can it be done?... Yes, but only by experienced pilots.
Flamers and machine guns do crazy dps.
That Video is heavily edited Canopian propaganda. Don't fall for the lies
The MWO hardpoint armsrace made my beloved Battlemaster pretty much useless. Well, outside of jank quad-ERLL builds.
With high speed, ECM and evasive pilot skill they become near impossible to hit.
In the hands of the AI they are little more than cannon fodder sadly..

Then there's me asking how assault mechs are able to kill anything. Then there's me beating the campaign all in a Jenner. Then there's me regularly out-damaging and out-killing three other human players in assault and heavy mechs in every conceivable combat role.
You can do better. I believe in you.
The armor values are two times greater than tabletop so AC/20 is effectively what tabletop AC/10 is, and even Locust can survive up to 8 AC/10 shots. Besides that, speed tanking, stats tanking and elitness tanking all exist, making lights a huge nuisance. At least there is a mod to turn them off.
