It is best to start a normal campaign or career. As Stalectos said, the dlc campaigns will start on or close to their canon dates and you WILL have had time by then to develop a good selections of mechs, weapons and tactics. If you don't, you are starting very handicapped by less good mechs and fewer of them than you might want.
Imo, the worst aspect of this game is not the AI or the bad company behaviour of PGI, it's the truly APPALLING writing which makes it incredibly difficult to tell what you are facing from the mission briefing. Dreadful maps is a close second.
Not quite.
Once the date COMES DUE you can start the dlc campaigns. But the campaigns have a "Use By" date and if you don't accept them by then, you miss out on the chance to do that dlc campaign on that overall playthrough.
Hope that makes sense :)
edit: You don't have to go there. You just have to keep an eye on your Transmissions.
I know i was playing for a week straight before i even started the legend of the kestrol lancers dlc and by that point i was already gear up with a full lances of assault mechs.
When the time comes, you should get a priority transmission from someone wanting to hire you for the dlc. the person will say that you have 6 months to except so its not an easy thing to miss or miss out on unless you do it on purpose.
not a bad idea to when you notice the priority transmission, make a manual save titled something about the DLC, get all your mechs repaired, and go shopping at the nearest industrial hub if you have lots of spare cash
DLC one has its first two missions about 3027, then a year before the main course meal in 3028 which will tie you up for 2 years until 3030.
Then another year or so till DLC two and its first two missions, 3031? Then another year before the main course meal in 3032.
You'll have 12 full years to go from 4 mechs (1 medium and 3 lights) to something better then what the DLCs give you as starting mechs.
Regarding your OP, you can do all of it in a normal Campaign mode too, you don't have to do a Career. KL and RoR campaigns will just become available at the same dates they would in a career game.
