Not sure about Sarna.
I personally wouldn't bother using a Cyclops that doesn't have an XL engine*; I don't know what the Z is packing, but I doubt it's an XL.
The basic (no Lostech) Cyclops is kind of a mediocre design.
*Edit: actually, I would use a Cyclops with endosteel and double sinks. XL isn't strictly necessary. Point is, some kind of Lostech is invaluable for the Cyclops.
Also need to have a Manly Mech discussion thread.
My favorite would be:
-Enforcer: pretty solid ballistic+energy mech, though armor is a little bit thin. Very memorable because it is one of the default mechs for Davion career start.
-Dervish-7D: I couldn't resist a SRM boat with DHS sprinting at 81kph. My enemies couldn't either. (and I would add masc on modded playthrough just for more fun)
-Kintaro: I don't like piloting this mech in MW5, but it did carry the early game in BATTLETECH, so I'll just place it on the list.
-Cyclops: Commander commanding his lance in a command unit, very fitting. It also provides some of the best views from cockpit.
-Highlander-732b: anything that can carry a gauss is good. This chassis is better because it can DFA.
I also like the Battlemaster 1G, the Atlas D and the Thunderbolt 5S a lot. I like mechs that can mount all three types of weapons, just for training up my pilots (and myself).
Well yeah its basically removed all backup weapons. It does have a lot of upgrade slot potential at least. Unless you got someone who is willing to lube up their rear torso when raining missiles down on someone they are not in for a fun time when someone gets close.
Oddly enough, I find myself using mostly the same mechs in my post-endgame Battletech career as I do in Mechwarrior. That is, Atlas and King Crab. I even give them the same loadouts (LRM focus with PPC/Gauss secondary weapons).
Statistically very effective, low risk designs. Flexible. Unlike MW5's somewhat ridiculous hard limit on LRM minimum range, a perfect 10 pilot in Battletech can fire LRMs at almost point blank with little accuracy loss.
Back in 2018, I used the Grasshopper a lot in Battletech. Then I didn't play for a few years, and when I came back, machine guns were gimped, which pretty much rendered the Grasshopper pointless.
After getting used to the 'new' mechanics, and getting a few DLCs on sale, I settled on a Marauder (3D), Cyclops (10-Z), Atlas II, and Annihilator as my go-to lance. Completely dominant. Annihilator's low speed is infinitely more tolerable in Battletech, with jump jets.
I corrected that for you.
I prefer to pair the AC/20 with the Cyclops, since its speed gives it the capability to run circles around slower assaults. If you hang back and snipe with the Cyclops by using Gauss, you might as well just pilot a Nightstar or something equally slow instead.
I mean, you can theoretically brawl at close range with Gauss, but it's not really ideal.
I would probably prefer quad LBX-10s, but it's not possible in MW5. Not without mods, anyway.
You get two large ballistic slots in the CP-S. That's it. A quad LBX setup would require 4 medium slots.
That said, two plain AC/20, tier 5, with a few ballistic upgrades, are plenty strong enough. I tried burst AC/20s, but the accuracy, even at close range, seemed poor. Extra DPS is simply not worth it.
The precision of plain AC/20s was very noticeable in my last battle. A Stalker was dropped on my lance, and I gutted it in 3 salvos. First one bit into the side torso structure; second destroyed said torso; final salvo destroyed the CT (fired into the Stalker from the side that had already been destroyed).
Just got the CP-S in my current playthrough (now post-campaign) and find it to be pretty much as you say in relation to the Nightstar.
There's a King Crab in vanilla with 4 med ballistic slots and an Annihilator variant which I have currently with 3 LBX10 AC SLD and one LBX10 AC. AI uses it well :)
edit: This is the first time I've lasted long post campaign and I think it might be to do with the fact that I didn't have many 95 or 100 tonners. I've now got a King Crab, an Annihilator, the Corsair and the Nightstar but the bulk is 80 to 90 tonners. I'm doing many 400 ton missions consistently at about 320-330 and 75 kph and work up to about 380 for maximum splat assassination missions - at a whopping 37 kph :) (I have the speed boost from the Cantina)
I got close, on a 250. All I had to do was get to the pickup point. However, I was almost destroyed, and my lance was gone. I got about 1200 away from it, and caught a stray shot from way behind me. I wasn't even doing straight lines, and trying to use terrain as cover. Still caught me. If I had known where the pickup point was going to be ahead of time, I could have started to head that way before my lance was gone. I would have made it then. I was never able to get to that point again, after about 12 tries. Haven't tried since. I've been working on leveling up my pilots, and I'll try again.
I feel so sorry for you. The CPLT-A1 is was nothing more than a over hyped prototype that has obviously shortcomings. I avoid them like the plague.
