fatal error crashes
I am getting really frustrated.

I am trying to play "Picking at scraps" and as the mission begins to start (as it starts to load) I get a crash and a "fatal error" message.

I am running the vanilla game, with only mouse and keyboard. Not even headphones.

I did what for me is "the usual". I updated my drivers (using windows update) and set all the graphics levels to their lowest settings. I verified local files and checked for an update on the game.

Anybody have any ideas?

Some people have said disabling RTX helps but can't tell if you've got a card that supports that or not.

Hi!

I'm running an AMD RTX 5700 XT

And thanks

well i can't help you..but i'm curious if when you play other missions (atleast im taking it as this specific mission is your issue) if you have flickering black "shadows" in line patterns and whatnot. i ask because it seems everyone with 6xxx series cards does, and im wondering if its present in the 5xxx cards also

Thank you for giving it a think, though. I was getting a bit rattled.

I found that I can run other missions, just not the high return one (picking at scraps.) I found somebody on another forum that said they worked around the problem by going and playing another mission, and then coming back.

I went and played another mission, but when I returned, the mission still crashed.

I haven't noticed any graphics issues at all, with shadows or flickers or anything.

Once again, thanks.

from what im seeing, anecdotally, it seems it COULD be an AMD issue at this stage, maybe driver level issues.

just an observation from other forums, but its a possibility

I have been reading about others with this problem and some have said they solved it by turning off any over clocking because Unity is so temperamental when it comes to over clocking. Others by by turning off laser-something or other.

I haven't dealt with this myself just putting this out there for consideration.

I think it isn't, I play career mode and I get a fatal error every 5 to 10 minutes in game while my graphic card is a 1080.

I'm getting fatal errors in the campaign with an Intel CPU and a 3090. Only seems to happen when in the hangar.

Edit: RTX on maximum.

From what I've read, fatal errors can be caused by running the game at graphics settings that are beyond what your hardware can support, at least for this game. So you could try turning down graphics settings and see if that helps with the problems. (In my case it was raytracing that caused a fatal error, on the first real mission in the game.) Since I turned raytracing off, no fatal errors at all. RTX 2060, i7-10750H at 1080p, 240hz on a Legion 5 laptop.

Note that, in my experience, that particular mission chain seems a lot more difficult then it's rating would suggest. (It seemed more difficult to me then difficulty 16 missions I'd done.) And one of the missions really annoyed me because a mech showed up that I had absolutely no chance of getting in salvage, it's too expensive. :b

THIS!
RTX 3080, 7700k CPU - Fatal crash constantly on one particular mission which was "low visibility" snow/dust
No matter what I did, verify game files, delete old saves, reinstall - it kept crashing

Ray tracing for me is always off, becuase of how poorly it runs in this game.

But what I did is turn every setting to Low or Off, including DLSS & AA
Once everything was off/low - the mission loaded!
As soon as it loaded, I turned every graphical option back to how it was!

Even with my RTX 3080, playing at 1440p with medium-high graphicaly settings, the game uses 40%-60% GPU & CPU - so you can can that the game engine just can't handle it sometimes even though your hardware is fine

I have been playing around with this and I have found for me I will get a fatal error crash when RTX is on and I have sharpening enabled. If I disable sharpening then RTX works and no crashes.

Though since the DLC came out my performance took a huge hit with RTX enabled compared to before the DLC release. Not sure why. So I just leave it off now.

RTX03070 CPU3700X
DLSS Performance RTX high no crashes.
DLSS balance or Quality RTX high crashes.

If my PC is RTX3090 it won't crash in quality.

3090 here. If RTX is on, the game will crash at some point.

Yep - switching that off for my 3070Ti allowed the mission to load OK.
