MW5 is very much SP focused. Online, such as it is, consists at its deepest of people joining you replacing an AI pilot on your team (and you, the host, provide their mech and equipment, they don't bring their own). It's more SP than anything else, really.

I was considering getting this to play with my wife. We game in the same room together. I don't imagine that she'll have any interest in playing solo. Will she be unable to improve her "piloting skills" or have any sense of progression if she is only playing as a member of my lance?

She would basically replace one of your AI characters and "level up" them, however she would not be able to progress with her own campaign so to speak.

Yeah, you two could play through one campaign first where one of you is the commander, and after that is done you could play through it again with the other one being the commander this time. This lets both of you see all of the story.
