So if you put a single point into it and got 400K worth of coverage, and you took 500K worth of damage, then you'd get the full 400K payout. That's just 400K worth of C-Bills added to your reward. If you then go and repair in a combat zone, you still need to pay the penalty yourself.
If you only took 100K worth of damage, then you'd only get a 100K payout on your 400K insurance plan. But again, if you repaired in a combat zone and it cost you 200K, you're still only got that 100K payout at mission completion. They don't pay out more after mission completion just because you want to repair in a warzone.
The reason why you do this is that per negotiation point, you can more coverage in insurance than you'd get in straight payout. That same point that got you 400K worth of insurance might have only otherwise gotten you 100K in extra payout. So if you think you're gonna take 400K or more in damage, taking the insurance will help you come out further ahead at the end of the mission.
Yes; it's not a free repair in the sense that they'll fix your mech for you, you'll just get paid up to whatever damage you incurred or the maximum you bargained for if your damaged exceeded that amount.
Yeah. You take damage, that damage is in X amount, and the insurance pays out X amount up to your maximum coverage. Then it is up to you as to whether or not you fly out of system to get it repaired for that much, or if you pay extra on top of that to make repairs in an active warzone.
Again, you bill them for the damage done, not the cost of the repairs, because the cost of the repairs depends on how, when, and where you do it. If you lose equipment that you can't replace one-for-one, then you're not just repairing, you're doing a refit as well.
