The variant isn't any better, unfortunately. It swaps one of the energy slots for a ballistic slot, but only a medium, so you can't put a Gauss on it. You end up with an Awesome with extra armor and an AC/5 replacing one of the PPC's.
Honestly, with so few weapon slots on the MAD-II, I struggled to use up all the tonnage. Max armor, leave on all 6 tons of jump jets, put 3 PPC's and 2 ML's on it, and start loading it up with Double Heat Sinks. In the end, I was putting on regular heat sinks just to use up tons and due to limited slots. I think I managed to get it up to 99 point something tons.
So, off to cold storage it went so a real mech could take it's place.
I just prefer KC's, Atlases, and even the slow version of the Banshee over it. So much more firepower, same speed and armor.
I'll happily take the MAD-II over the Annihilator though. Even with the cantina mission +15% speed, it's too slow to be fun.
Just my opinions. I don't like the regular Marauder either, for the same reasons. Both mechs are all style (the DO look cool) and zero substance, compared to others of the same weight.
It is the only assault mech where i use JJ because i dont know where else to put all that tonnage.
