When does ETERNAL become a good single-player game?
In the mood for a new (to me) shooter. I never got far with DOOM ETERNAL, I recall. It's been a while, so I reinstall and restart.

I spend the next 40 minutes lumbering around smallish maps like I'm wading through molasses. The maps are filled with jumping puzzles, but there's no sprint or dash. I collect lots of meaningless stuff and get fragged by bullet sponges way faster than me. Fun!

Constantly running out of health and ammo means spamming the same QTEs over and over. Glory kill for health, chainsaw for ammo, on endless repeat. If I wanted to watch this much animation I'd be on Netflix.

I've read there are perks (or whatever) that speed up the player's movement. I have yet to earn one, probably because I get impatient and move on to something that lets me feel like a badass from the get-go, instead of a GWAR roadie on Thorazine. That's on me.

Life is short. This is the second or third time I've tried to get into ETERNAL, so I have to ask: when does the single-player game become fast, dynamic and entertaining? How much slog-time do I need to invest to get past the slow lumbering part?

TIA for your thoughtful feedback.

the early game is somewhat to be desired at least i find on replay value i hate not having so many tools, but they need to introduce each tool so slowly to avoid players being over whelmed.
I would honestly say it probably won't be your first play though before it clicks for most players. Hard for me to tell, I played this game since launch and barely remember how I played on my first play though. But it changed how I play games.

It becomes a great game at level one.

It may be a great game, but it's not a great first-person shooter at level one. You've got almost 1,000 hours in. Is it possible you're not remembering what it's really like at the outset, with no perks or upgrades?

Start a new profile and let me know how long it takes to get back to that "great game" feeling.
It's pretty fair to say that level one is rough on your first playthrough. You don't have all the guns, the Slayer is squishy, you don't have dash, no upgrades, no super punch, no grapple hook, no flame belch, no ice bomb... basically your entire kit is missing. And you don't know what's ahead.

Death is still very avoidable though, all attacks are either melee or projectiles and the chainsaw and glory kill system means that being aggressive instead of cowering will keep you alive even if you make a lot of mistakes. But still, Hell on Earth is a slog, no question about it. Good thing you get dash and other important abilities in level 2.

But level 5 though is usually when the gameplay loop "clicks" for most people. It's the point of the game when you have the Super shotgun, ballista, multiple runes, important upgrades like sentinel crystals and a general understanding of how the demons work and what things get you killed fast. Your power curve shoots straight up and you start to crap all over the demons that were wrecking you before.

Everything before that though is sort of blue balling you steadily until the game starts to show its full hand. For good reason though, the game would be even more overwhelming for some people if it didn't introduce each mechanic steadily.

Playing eternal again and again from a fresh slayer is pretty normal. You improve each run and that's why it has lots of replayability.

You get the ability to Dash early in level 2, it's also where you can get your first Rune.
on super gore nest (level 5), because at this level you will already have enough upgrades and almost all arsenal

Doom Eternal is like a musical instrument.

When you pick it up the first time you're complete ♥♥♥♥. You will probably dislike it. It will sound like trash. You'll barely understand what you're doing.

That feeling may never go away. It didn't go away for me until I cleared the campaign a couple times and started learning how to play and maximize my tools.

Then I was shredding and making badass music, and playing an instrument is 10x more fun when you can actually play it somewhat competently.

So the answer to your question on when Eternal gets to be a good single player game? Possibly never. And if you've already tried 3 times? Go play something else. If you've tried 3 times and don't like it, it's either because it's not your type of game or you simply don't want to learn to "play the instrument," and none of us can really help you with either scenario.

For me, it became good once I got the Sticky Bomb upgrade for the shotgun. Hitting an imp with it and watching them explode mid-leap filled my heart with joy.

Every UN run of the campaign is exactly that, you start with a clean slate (except for skins), and clear it all, without dying, on nightmare.
From gameplay point of view, for me it is a game that starts at 8/10 on first two levels, then goes to 11/10 on cultist base, and to 12/10 from super gore nest and on.

Was it always like that? Not sure. On the first run through the campaign I remember I was incredibly stressed, constantly running away from stuff, running out of ammo, no armor, things just didn't click. And the farther in, the harder it became.
However, I still went back for a second run through (after some time) because somehow it felt similar to failing in those classic arena shooters against good players, I knew there was a lot of headroom to improve in them if you try hard enough. So I tried the same approach with this game, and discovered the real game I think around my third time through the campaign.

Like a kazoo.

It looks bad and you look lame.

A kazoo or a $15,000 Les Paul or a $15,000,000 Stradivarius Violin, you'll look bad and you'll look lame either way. If you are holding a highly desired and expensive instrument like that without putting in the effort to learn how to play and can't do anything but complain about it then you'll look even dumber than you would with a .25 kazoo.

If you aren't going to put in the effort - or don't want to - it's no problem. Put it back in the case/trash, forget it exists or sell it to someone who will, and stop looking like a complete tool.

That's a silly assumption to make, i have over 60+ UN clears so i know exactly what it's like to start with nothing, & it's still a great fps at level one.

How else do you think i have nearly 1000 hours?

well i dont know, the only real issue i see is lack of difficulty. on nightmare this game feels like ultra-violence in previous doom

The game is fast from the beginning, but it gets faster later at level 3 with the meat hook and dashes in level 2.

In this game, you always receive damage, but if you are in low health all the time, you are playing fundamentally wrong, so even if you get all the perks, you will still think the game doesn't feel good.

Anyways i dont like the first level it is long and empty because there are olny two types of heaby demons, the only one battle is the one with more than one caco demon, actually is the penultimate arena. For me this game becomes great starting from level 2 with the dash and more heavy demons, but the level 3 is still my favorite.
