UnderTheMayo DOOM Criticism
You know how Underthemayo gets a lot of flak for his opinions on other games? Recently he did a video on Arkham Knight that everyone is tearing into right now. I’m surprised people have barely touched his DOOM Eternal videos to try and refute any of his points. The videos I’ve found that have actually done this are very few, and are done by much smaller channels, making them hard to find.

He is objectively correct about Doom Eternal. There is nothing to refute.

I feel like in Mayo's specific case Doom Eternal was one of the first games he understood on a fundamental level and got involved with the community, most of his videos on this game are on point. It helps that id was very vocal about their design goals and you see them represented when you play the game so it's pretty easy to just repeat things most people are not going to research.

But unfortunately whenever he tries to discuss other games he tends to hold them up to an imaginary pedestal where DE exists instead of trying to look at them in their own vacuum. I couldn't even watch his Ultrakill video in its entirety, it's just bad. But I LOVE Ultrakill so maybe it's bias.

I haven't played Ultrakill but I believe he has valid criticisms of that game. I think his approach on his first Ultrakill video was just not appropriate. I don't know if he was harrassed on twitter or on the UK discord server for stating his opinions before he did the video but the way he approached the topic was very sarcastic. I wished he just did his usual video analysis on that.

I agree on most of his opinions about the other games he talked about, but I mostly disagree with him on the Arkham Knight video, though I could see why he would dislike the Batmobile sections. For me, they were not the best feature of Arkham Knight, but they are not the worst. That's the Riddler trophies for me.

The criticism that Mayo compares everything to Doom Eternal isn't based on reality imo. Maybe that's true for the shooters he reviews but not for other genres. He's very much into survival horror games and when he reviews them his point of reference certainly isn't Doom Eternal, it's the classic resident evil games and games of this sort. Same with God of War. His main criticism is that the combat is much less agile than the original games, the lack of verticality, the close camera and a lot of story and lore aspects. And he has huge contempt for boy, ridicolously huge contempt. Since I never played the old GOWs I'm indifferent to these criticisms and I enjoyed the game but they seem valid, even if one doesn't share them.

He mentioned DE in a lot in non DE videos so I get how this misconception came to be, but it's still a misconception.

I disagreed with him on Arkham Knight because I think combat, predator sections and air traversal are peak in the series. That more than makes up for the not so great parts, and the car wasn't even that bad, just overused for something that's "just okay", when other aspects are excellent. But whatever, sometimes you have to disagree.

The ultrakill video with his buddy strapped to a chair was real bs. It wasn't even funny. His Elden Ring live stream was weird too. He can be a piece of work, so if some people don't like him: okay. But all in all he knows his job and his reviews are well thought out.

Under The Mayo is how I learned about quick-swapping weapon combos in Eternal, just a few months after the game released. I've learned a lot from his videos over the last few years, though I definitely don't agree with all of his opinions.
