You take your chance with mods. I can tell you horror story's about some of the mods I've seen. (I mean really stupid stuff) Doom 3 had some that only the person who made it knew what was going on. Others like you said were just unplayable.
I made afew mod maps back in the day and thought they were great. But in fact they were not. There are alot of 1st time modders out there, you just gotta watch out for them.
Currently, I'm playing the Slaughter Tour map pack for battlemode maps. Each map has a unique challenge like an orbital laser that tracks you while your fighting, or needing to kill certain number of a single type of demon within a time limit before releasing a toxic gas that damages you unless you complete the challenge. These maps are very challenging, even frustrating sometimes but I really like the challenges. And of course Doom Eternal's combat loop is very satisfying for me.
