Doom Eternal Crash / Freeze Fix
Like many others the game used to play buttery smooth, then all of a sudden it's nothing more than a crash / freeze fest. Maybe I could play for a min before freezing, maybe freeze as soon as the level loaded, or maybe I made it through half way the 1st map before. Freeze, either way it was obviously a major issue from one of the recent updates. Did the devs even play it before release????

Things I tried:
Set all settings to low
turned off DLSS
turned off raytracing
turned of DOF
Updated Nvidia Driver from 566.36 to 572.83 using DDU to uninstall
Updated AMD chipset from 6.10.17.152 to 7.02.13.148
deleted shader cache
turned off shader cache
turned off v-sync in NVCP
set game .exe to run as admin / disabled full screen optimizations
uninstalled and reinstalled the game

None of the above worked so I took a trip back to the settings in game. I saw chromatic aberation still on so I disabled it and tried another run. I was able to complete the 1st level without crashing or freezing, I then cranked the graphics to ultra nightmare, enabled DOF, shader cache, and turned on v-sync in NVCP for my G-sync monitors, I also kept the present from compute turned off to not interfere with the G-sync. I was able to run through the 1st map 2x more times without crashing or freezing.

Seems like its as simple as turning off chromatic aberration to fix the crashing / freezing. Also if the GPU is OC'd, try it with stock values or at most with the power / temp cranked to max. I haven't tested it with Ray Tracing on yet but I will. I know with Ray tracing on and chromatic aberration on it crashes / freezes. You may need to delete the shader cache as well. It's in the steam folder on the drive the game is installed. Location will vary, see my example below:

A:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\shadercache\782330

Current in game settings below:

Settings on Ultra Nightmare
v-sync off
DlSS off
DOF on
Ray Tracing Off
game exe back to normal instead of running as admin, also turned off disable full screen optimizations
turned shader cache back on

Hope this helps with your crashing / freezing
Update: Played again with Ray Tracing on, Enhance AA x8 in NVCP as well as Super Sampling x8, I like the super sampling in the NVCP better than DLSS, often times it works better especially on newer GPU's, and you can use it on pretty much any game. Still no crashing.

This post helped me a lot. I was playing Doom 2016 smoothly with cranked up to max settings and finished it last week, no issues, started playing Doom Eternal till I got to Nekravol pt 2. It crashes in the first half of the mission only happened to that specific area and specific mission. Turned off VSYNC, Enable HDR, raytracing and Chromatic aberration and it worked out fine. Thanks for this post!

13600KF/4080, Freeze when play, Switch chromatic aberation OFF help, thanks!
This didn't help me sadly.
it worked, i tried at first onli chromatic aberration off and it still crash, but then raytracing off and deleted shader cache and perfect. TYTYTY:er_wave:
